Job Summary:

The Surgical Assistant is a vital member of the surgical team in the Operating Room at Rush University Medical Center. This role requires a high level of professionalism, attention to detail, and effective communication skills to ensure seamless patient care before, during, and after surgery.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain a professional attitude to promote responsibility as an individual and as a member of the surgical team.
  • Coordinate team efforts to provide the most qualified support to the surgical patient, surgeon, and all members of the surgical team.
  • Develop awareness of the patient as an individual, with specific psychological and physical needs, respecting the patient's inherent right to privacy, dignity, and safety.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including surgical scrub preparation, positioning, draping, and sterile field maintenance.
  • Assist surgeons in tying off and coagulation of vessels as necessary under the supervision of a physician.
  • Act as the surgeon's second assistant throughout procedures, including holding retractors and other specific tasks as required.
  • Assist in patient transfer pre and post-operatively from the operating room table.
  • Perform other duties as necessary during the operative procedure as directed by the surgeon.

Requirements:
  • High School diploma.
  • Illinois Registered Surgical Assistant License.
  • Certified Surgical Assistant.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and competence on all surgical services.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with all members of the surgical team and multi-disciplines.
