Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and dedicated Student Nurse Intern to join our team at Mount Sinai Health System. As a Student Nurse Intern, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a medical-surgical rotation, working alongside our experienced nursing staff to provide high-quality patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Perform and record patients' vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respirations, pulse oximetry, and pain rating.
  • Document clinical data as assigned, in a computer or manual system.
  • Perform clinical procedures, such as specimen collection, venipuncture, EKG, application of sequential compression sleeves, post-mortem care, falls prevention, maintenance of skin integrity, and capillary blood glucose monitoring.
  • Set up for selected procedures and assist RNs accordingly.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, such as feeding, bathing, and/or toileting.
  • Orient patients to Specialty Service/Unit environment. Assist patient with ambulation and all levels of mobilization.
  • Assist with dietary functions, including delivering and collecting patient trays at bedside, passing menus to patients, and assisting them with menu completion.
  • Maintain accurate and timely systems for transmission of patient dietary orders and changes.
  • Assist in pre- and post-operative procedures, such as patient transport, completion of pre-op checklist, and reception of patient from PACU/OR.
  • Utilize measures to ensure patient safety and promote a restraint-free environment.
  • Maintain use of restraints for patients under the direction of a RN and according to set policies and procedures.
  • Assist in emergency resuscitative procedures as directed by the registered professional nurse.
  • Provide care on the deceased as well as the involved family/significant other.
  • Perform pertinent observations/specific treatments of procedures, as assigned.
  • Document patient care delivered on appropriate flow sheets.
  • Assist the professional registered nurse in the collaborative plan for patient education, participating in patient/teaching activities.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and functional environment, including ensuring for the comfortable movement of the patient. Assist the patient in room maintenance, such as bed-stripping and trash removal, when necessary.
  • Perform One-to-One/Constant Observation and Safety Observations of patients as ordered, e.g., for safety, elopement, or suicide prevention.
  • Perform correct infection control techniques and maintain isolation status for patients under direction of a RN and according to set procedures.
  • Operate the pneumatic tube system when required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
