As an Interventional Radiologic Technologist at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a critical role in performing routine and highly specialized diagnostic and therapeutic interventional radiology procedures on patients. Under general supervision, you will follow established parameters/protocols for use by physicians in diagnosis and treatment of pathologies. Your responsibilities will include assisting in maintaining a smooth operational flow and maximum patient volume, as well as scrubbing in and assisting the physician in surgical procedures, circulating within the procedure room, and positioning patients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate extremely technical imaging equipment and apply ionizing radiation to patients in accordance with standard operating procedures, departmental policies, and protocols.
- Position patients according to departmental procedure manuals, move and assist patients onto tables, and provide for patients' comfort during procedures.
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, utilizing image-guided surgical procedures, sterile technique, and radiographic technique.
- Operate laser imagers, radiographic, and fluoroscopic equipment to obtain radiographic images, critique radiographs for quality and accuracy, and select and film images for permanent patient records.
- Provide radiation protection in accordance with regulations, select accurate technical factors on an individual patient basis, and review history and pertinent images with designated Interventional Radiologists.
- Assist physicians with specialized diagnostic and interventional procedures, handle equipment, prepare procedure and instrument trays, prep and explain procedures to patients, and respond effectively to patient care emergencies.
- Utilize universal precautions at all times when working with patients, set up and maintain sterile fields, and troubleshoot technical and mechanical problems.
- Record and accumulate patient statistics in daily logbooks, enter data into the Radiology Information (RIS) and supply inventory systems, and complete records accurately, including physician-billing sheets and ICD-9 and CPT codes.
- Respond to urgent and emergent imaging procedures by being available on a rotating call-in basis and demonstrate basic competencies in processing images and troubleshooting.
Unit Management:
- Review requests daily for Interventional procedures, assist in prioritizing for a smooth workflow, and address any issues impeding the workforce.
- Perform minor troubleshooting operations, initiate calls for equipment problems, and document equipment problems in accordance with Kaiser Permanente department policy and procedures manual.
- Communicate effectively with patients, nurses, and physicians, particularly regarding information on angiography procedures requiring specialized patient preparation.
- Communicate with clinicians regarding patient preparation for angiography/interventional procedures, procedure results, and to assist in resolving problems as needed.
- Communicate and assist the Interventional Radiologist in developing and modifying angiography/interventional practices/procedures.
- Act as a role model for Radiologic Technologists, respect the workplace, and other healthcare professionals in the area.
- Act as an integral member of the IR team, promoting efficient workflow processes and maximum patient safety.
- Handle telephone inquiries regarding physician and/or patient information relative to angiography procedures in an effective and appropriate manner.
- Perform miscellaneous clerical functions as needed.
- Participate in the scheduling, assignment, and review of work performed by Interventional Radiographers.
- Ensure the maintenance of adequate levels of interventional supplies and materials by placing orders in the ordering system and communicating orders with Material Management Department.
- Assist in maintaining perpetual inventory count and scans product not in inventory systems.
- Meet with vendors on new products, arrange in-services on new products, and communicate new product information to the staff.
