Position Overview:

The City of Norfolk is currently seeking applications for the role of Law Enforcement Officer. This position is open to:

  • Virginia Certified Police Officers
  • Certified Police Officers from other states within the United States
  • Virginia In-State Jailor/Deputy Sheriff Lateral Transfers

About the Department:

The Norfolk Police Department has a longstanding tradition of protecting lives and property, preventing and investigating crimes, and maintaining public order. Established in 1797, the department serves a diverse community and is committed to upholding the law with integrity and respect.

Training and Development:

Selected candidates will undergo comprehensive training tailored to their certification status:

  • Virginia Certified Police Officers: 5-7 weeks of training at the Norfolk Police Department Training Center.
  • Certified Police Officers from other states: 8 weeks of training covering legal, firearms, and defensive tactics.
  • Virginia In-State Jailor/Sheriff Deputy: 25-26 weeks of training to meet state certification requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
