Job Overview

Position Summary:

The role involves overseeing a specialized educational environment tailored for students with unique learning requirements. This includes facilitating instructional activities, evaluating student progress, gathering and interpreting data, training staff, and managing behavioral dynamics within the classroom.

Key Responsibilities:

Instructional Duties (80%):

  • Deliver tailored instruction to students, guided by assessment results and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress to adjust educational goals and strategies.
  • Collect and assess data from both students and staff to identify training and program needs.
  • Organize the classroom environment to enhance student learning, independence, and safety.
  • Develop and utilize effective, age-appropriate educational materials.
  • Conduct various assessments to prepare for instructional planning and meetings.

Behavioral Management (10%):

  • Provide training for staff through observations and meetings.
  • Draft IEP goals and performance evaluations based on student data.
  • Report on student progress in relation to IEP objectives on a regular basis.
  • Evaluate student skills and document performance for necessary assessments.
  • Maintain communication logs between home and school for students.
  • Address concerns from parents or educational agencies and escalate as needed.
  • Adhere to protocols for resource requests and administrative tasks.
  • Manage daily schedules for student activities.
  • Plan and execute daily instructional activities, both individually and in groups.

Classroom Oversight (10%):

  • Establish clear expectations aligned with program goals.
  • Provide constructive feedback to staff to support their professional growth.
  • Conduct regular meetings to discuss classroom dynamics and address any issues.
  • Ensure staff possess the necessary skills to meet educational objectives.
  • Facilitate observation opportunities for parents and educational personnel.
  • Document and address performance issues in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Conduct performance evaluations for supervised staff.
  • Review safety protocols to maintain a secure working environment.
  • Implement a structured approach to address staff concerns promptly.
  • Administer medications as required, following appropriate training.
  • Respond to emergencies as needed, adhering to established training protocols.

Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Proven experience working with children with autism and their families.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills and strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Familiarity with special education methodologies and behavioral analysis.
  • Prior experience in teaching children with autism.
  • Effective teaching and analytical skills, with experience managing diverse classrooms.
  • Specific expertise related to the educational role being applied for.

Education:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required.
  • A Master's degree in special education or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Certification in Applied Behavior Analysis is advantageous.
  • Must hold or be eligible for special education teacher licensure in Virginia.
  • Commitment to maintaining licensure and engaging in ongoing professional development.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds safely.
  • Capable of bending and moving fluidly at all joints.
  • Ability to kneel and maintain that position for short durations.
  • Reach in all directions and grasp objects using both hands.
  • Quick movement in various environments to ensure safety.
  • Ability to run if necessary to ensure student safety.
  • Maintain balance while performing physical tasks.
