Job Summary

Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, this role assists patients with activities of daily living, provides basic nursing care, and maintains a safe and clean environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist patients with hygiene, grooming, and activities of daily living, including bed baths, sponge baths, showers, hair shampoos, nail and skin care, shaving, and oral hygiene.
  • Assist with restorative nursing procedures, such as range of motion exercises.
  • Respond to patient call lights and assist with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
  • Meet patients' nutritional needs by assembling meal trays, heating food, preparing snacks, feeding patients, and cleaning up after meals.
  • Offer patients adequate fluids and record fluid intake as required.
  • Set up and use oxygen concentrators, oxygen tanks, oral suction, and other equipment as needed.
  • Measure and record intake and output, including drainage from Hemovac, Foley Catheter, Jackson Pratt Drains, Nephrostomy tubes, and Gastric suction.
  • Assist patients with elimination, including bathroom use, bedside commode, Foley care, incontinence care, enemas, colostomy/ileostomy bag changes, and use of bedpans and urinals.
  • Assist patients with self-administered medication as directed by the RN.
  • Take patients' temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, girth, and record the results.
  • Collect specimens as requested.
  • Maintain patient safety at all times and provide safe transfer techniques in/out of bed, to chair or wheelchair, commode, and in/out of shower/tub.
  • Utilize mechanical lifts as needed and ambulate patients using assistance devices such as canes or walkers.
  • Perform light housekeeping duties, including removal of soiled linen and trash, dusting, and wiping down surfaces in patient rooms and patient/family areas.
  • Perform simple dressing checks and changes and post-mortem care.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid NYS Driver's License required.
  • Prior homecare or institutional experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and write in English required.
