About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and innovative Public Matters Editor to lead our editorial efforts in promoting democracy and civic engagement. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive editorial strategy that showcases our commitment to fair, accurate, and contextualized reporting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a strategic editorial plan that aligns with our mission and values
  • Collaborate with our news team to identify and develop story ideas that cover issues surrounding democracy and civic engagement
  • Assign and edit news stories, ensuring that they meet our high standards of quality and accuracy
  • Supervise and mentor a team of journalists, providing guidance and support to help them grow and develop in their careers
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including community leaders, policymakers, and other influencers
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in democracy and civic engagement, and identify opportunities for us to cover these issues in a unique and compelling way
Requirements
  • 4+ years of experience in a newsroom environment, with a strong background in editorial leadership
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful editorial strategies
  • Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team of journalists and other stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of democracy and civic engagement issues, and the ability to identify opportunities for us to cover these issues in a unique and compelling way
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in a newsroom environment, with a strong background in editorial leadership
  • Daily digital, broadcast news, broadcast news magazine, public affairs program, or podcast experience
  • Project management skills, including successful prioritization of short- and long-term planning
  • A spirit of experimentation and learner's mindset
  • An appreciation of the journalism on all KPBS platforms
  • Broad knowledge of current San Diego regional issues
  • Ability to place issues in a national, state, or international context
  • Audio and/or video recording and editing experience
  • Experience working in public media
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Cultural competencies; an awareness that your own worldview is one of many
