Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Certified Surgical Technician to join our Orthopedic Department at Spire Orthopedic Partners. As a key member of our surgical team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional patient care and ensuring the smooth operation of our operating rooms.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the surgical team in the care of patients during operative procedures and perioperative tasks.
- Implement a plan of care for patients in the Operating Room under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.
- Maintain strict Aseptic Technique and ensure a safe and efficient environment for patients and staff.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide instruments, supplies, and equipment in a timely manner.
- Organize and maintain instrumentation and supplies, and ensure their availability for procedures.
- Monitor the use of counted items (sponges and sharps) and assist the circulating nurse in counting and reporting any discrepancies.
- Follow standard precautions and infection control policies to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
- Prepare the Operating Room for procedures, including setting up equipment and supplies, and ensuring their proper functioning.
- Assist in positioning patients and ensuring their comfort during procedures.
- Transport patients to and from the Operating Room, and ensure their safety during transport.
- Assist in the cleaning and turnover of the Operating Room, including bringing the table down to the decontamination room.
- Break down the table and check inventory and equipment, reporting any shortages or defects to the appropriate personnel.
- Perform proper decontamination and processing of instrumentation for sterilization, following AAMI standards.
- Prepare supplies and equipment for procedures, and stock 'wall closet' supplies and warming closet.
- Check case carts and pull case carts for next day procedures.
- Copy daily schedules and distribute them to the team.
- Obtain drugs from the Anesthesia work room, and prepare procedure rooms for the day with necessary supplies and equipment.
- Maintain and monitor supplies to ensure their availability, and assist in transporting patients.
- Ensure a safe patient environment, and interact with patients to ensure their comfort.
- Assist with different procedures, including radiofrequency, and have working knowledge of medications used by physicians.
- Turn rooms over after cases, and prepare for following procedures.
- Prepare rooms for the following day, and clean and stock Anesthesia Carts as needed.
- Maintain supplies, including placing and receiving orders, and putting stock away.
- In the absence of the Lead Technician, may interact with sales personnel regarding supplies, maintain equipment, and send out for repair or exchange.
- Decontaminate instruments and equipment, and sterilize equipment according to manufacturers' guidelines and AAMI guidelines.
- Wrap instruments and fold towels, and clean stretchers, making them up with fresh linens.
- Assist the PACU Scheduling Coordinator with putting charts together and affixing stickers.
- May be asked to assist in the preparation of the wet lab for demonstrations, and ensure equipment and supplies needed for the demo are available and in good working order.
- Use Universal/Standard Precautions in handling demo room specimens and instrumentation.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of an approved surgical technologist certification program.
- One to three years' operating room experience, preferably in an ambulatory surgical center.
- Experience with orthopedics required.
- Working knowledge of office equipment and software.
- Familiarity with HIPAA, insurance regulations, policies, procedures, and other regulatory policies.
- Medical office procedures, policies, practices, and medical terminology, telephone protocol, and professional etiquette.
- Understanding of electronic medical systems.
