The pharmacy intern plays a vital role in supporting licensed pharmacists in delivering comprehensive pharmacy services. This includes the assessment and processing of prescriptions from independent practitioners, alongside the essential tasks of medication procurement, preparation, and distribution. All responsibilities are performed under the guidance of a licensed pharmacist. The goal is to gain proficiency in pharmacy operations and a foundational understanding of pharmacology and medication use.
At Intermountain Healthcare, the pharmacy intern program is designed to provide a collaborative environment for pharmacy students across various academic years. As an intern, your responsibilities will evolve in alignment with your educational progress. The program offers a broad exposure to inpatient care, encompassing Central Pharmacy operations, medication history collection, and clinical consult management.
Interns in their first year typically begin by familiarizing themselves with hospital operations through Central Pharmacy tasks. As they advance to their second year, they engage directly with patients to gather precise medication histories. In their final year, interns will have the chance to participate in clinical shifts, assisting pharmacists with therapeutic consultations, medication education, and the discharge process for transplant patients. This internship also provides opportunities for mentorship from experienced pharmacists, aiding in the development of skills necessary for future residency or employment.
Responsibilities
The pharmacy intern role is primarily educational, requiring students from accredited pharmacy programs to fulfill training hours, which may be compensated. Interns are categorized as Level I-IV based on their academic standing:
- Level I: Focus on Central Pharmacy Operations, assisting with workflow, pharmacy automation, and medication management.
- Level II: Responsible for collecting medication histories from patients, working alongside pharmacists in various departments.
- Level III: Continues to gather medication histories while beginning training for clinical responsibilities, including managing Collaborative Practice Agreements.
- Level IV: Expected to perform both medication history collection and clinical staffing duties, providing patient education and managing specific medication protocols.
Essential Qualifications
- Must possess a current state Pharmacy Intern license (Level I's only need to have it by the start date).
- Enrollment in an accredited College of Pharmacy is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a hospital pharmacy setting is advantageous.
Physical Requirements:
The role involves various physical tasks including lifting, manual dexterity, and the ability to communicate effectively.
