Job Overview
The pharmacy intern plays a crucial role in supporting licensed pharmacists in delivering pharmaceutical services. This includes the assessment and entry of prescriptions and the operational tasks related to medication procurement, preparation, and distribution. All responsibilities are carried out under the guidance of a licensed pharmacist. The goal is to gain proficiency in pharmacy operations and foundational pharmacology.
Program Structure
At Intermountain Healthcare, the pharmacy intern program is designed to provide a comprehensive experience for pharmacy students from various educational backgrounds. Interns will have their responsibilities evolve as they advance through their academic journey. The program encompasses a wide range of inpatient care experiences, from Central Pharmacy operations to patient medication history collection and clinical consult management.
Internship Levels
- Level I: Focus on Central Pharmacy Operations, assisting with workflow and gaining exposure to medication management.
- Level II: Engage in collecting medication histories from patients, working closely with pharmacists in various departments.
- Level III: Continue medication history collection while beginning training for clinical shifts, focusing on collaborative practice agreements.
- Level IV: Responsible for both medication history collection and staffing clinical shifts, managing collaborative agreements and providing patient education.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver exceptional service to patients and healthcare professionals.
- Communicate effectively with team members regarding duties and concerns.
- Provide patient education under pharmacist supervision.
- Seek training and feedback to enhance technical skills.
- Adhere to all relevant laws and regulations.
- Participate in departmental fiscal responsibilities and quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- Must possess a current state Pharmacy Intern license.
- Enrollment in an accredited College of Pharmacy is required.
Preferred Skills
- Prior experience in a hospital pharmacy setting is advantageous.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform tasks involving lifting, manual dexterity, and effective communication.
