Overview
As a Custodian, you play a vital role in ensuring that our facilities are safe, clean, and compliant with all relevant regulations. Your responsibilities include cleaning, maintaining, and repairing our facilities in areas where professional licensure is not necessary. This position directly reports to the Center Director or Manager of Facilities and may require reassignment to various locations as needed for operational purposes.
As a representative of Save the Children, you are expected to prioritize the safety and security of children and families, adhering to our core values of Accountability, Ambition, Collaboration, Creativity, and Integrity.
In this role, you will be expected to actively prevent child abuse by being vigilant, practicing good judgment, and utilizing training to minimize risks to children.
It is essential to take proactive measures to protect children who may be at risk and to report any instances of child abuse, while also promoting awareness and training around child safeguarding obligations.
Key Responsibilities
- Adhere to established cleaning schedules for classrooms, kitchens, offices, restrooms, storage areas, hallways, and entrances.
- Ensure that all areas are free from hazards and report any safety, sanitation, or fire risks to the appropriate supervisor.
- Conduct regular safety inspections of the facility and grounds to maintain a secure environment.
- Implement health and safety precautions to protect yourself, children, families, and staff.
- Restock supplies in restrooms and classrooms; sanitize areas as required and manage waste disposal.
- Keep an inventory of custodial supplies and report needs to the supervisor.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs and maintaining equipment.
- Maintain records of supply inventory and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
- Gather information and assist in planning for facility upgrades and minor repairs.
- Comply with all safety and building code requirements relevant to Head Start/Early Head Start facilities.
- May perform minor plumbing, painting, carpentry, and electrical repairs as assigned.
- Assist with outdoor maintenance tasks such as snow removal, mowing, and landscaping as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff in accordance with policies and foster positive relationships with coworkers and the community.
- Ensure the safety of children through active supervision techniques.
- Maintain a high level of alertness and safety in all tasks.
- Complete other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or G.E.D. is required.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Familiarity with basic operations, tools, and terminology used in facility maintenance.
- Ability to operate light trucks and standard cleaning equipment.
- Capability to follow both oral and written instructions and take initiative.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse work environment.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform medium to heavy physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 5-10 pounds constantly. Tasks may include sitting, crawling, kneeling, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and grasping.
All candidates must pass a comprehensive background check and meet health requirements prior to employment.
It is necessary to maintain a valid driver's license and comply with all organizational policies regarding vehicle operation.
