Schedule Details:
Schedule will vary based on academic commitments and clinical rotations, including weekend duties.
Key Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist, you will assist in executing routine and fundamental respiratory therapy tasks such as oxygen administration, pulse oximetry, aerosol treatments, and incentive spirometry.
Collect and sanitize equipment from various hospital locations, reassembling it following established protocols while adhering to safety precautions.
Manage both disposable and reusable equipment in line with infection control practices.Complete annual hospital competencies and familiarize yourself with new equipment, supplies, procedures, and processes relevant to your role.
Assist with patient positioning and transportation, which may involve lifting and pushing/pulling, utilizing appropriate techniques (as applicable).
Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care for patients.
Understand the principles of growth and development across the lifespan and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's condition, interpreting the necessary information to identify each patient's needs relative to their age-specific requirements, and delivering care as outlined in departmental policies and procedures.
Age-specific information is further detailed in departmental job standards.Licensure and Certification:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required.
Educational Requirements:
Currently enrolled in an accredited or recognized Respiratory Therapy program.
Experience:
No prior experience is necessary.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
For Wisconsin externs:
Must transition into a graduate respiratory therapist role immediately.
For Illinois externs:
The externship status shall not exceed three years from enrollment in an approved program.
Possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to work independently.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to walk, stand, squat, reach overhead, and sit throughout the workday.
Repetitive hand use including simple grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine manipulation is required.
Physical Abilities:
Lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
Lift up to 20 lbs. overhead.
Carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
Additional Abilities:
Push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
Perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with assistance.
Must have functional speech, vision, and hearing capabilities.
May encounter chemical and radiation hazards as well as exposure to blood and body fluids; therefore, personal protective equipment must be utilized as necessary.
