Job Title: Athletic Trainer 2 - Sports Medicine

The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Sports Medicine is seeking a full-time Athletic Trainer 2 to work in a physician practice, providing patient-centered care under the supervision of attending physicians.

Job Summary:

The Athletic Trainer 2 will conduct comprehensive health histories and physical assessments of patients with acute, chronic, or potential injuries and illnesses. The incumbent will also perform physical examinations, present cases to attending physicians, and transcribe, enter, and execute standing orders at the direction of the supervising physician.

Core Job Functions:
  • Conducts comprehensive or episodic health history and physical assessment of patients with acute, chronic, or potential injuries and illnesses.
  • Takes a thorough history, including chief complaint, vitals, pain score, mechanism of injury, past medical history, and review of systems.
  • Performs an appropriate physical examination, including range of motion testing, strength/manual muscle testing, neurovascular and sensation testing, palpation, special and ligamentous testing, and functional testing.
  • Presents cases to attending physicians including any available imaging results.
  • Transcribes, enters, and executes standing orders at the direction of the supervising physician within the limits of the practice agreement/scope of practice.
  • Provides patient education, including answering questions and instructing on rehabilitation exercises.
  • Fits patients with splints, crutches, braces, wraps, and other orthopedic appliances/DMEs and educates on proper use.
  • Performs wound care, gait training, and casting application and removal.
  • Removes sutures and provides dressing changes to post-operative patients.
  • Aids the supervising physician in preparing for and administering injections.
  • Completes surgical booking sheets before surgery at the attending surgeon's direction.
  • Communicates with patients, other staff, and providers regarding patient care and questions and documents in the electronic medical record.
  • Assists attending physicians with paperwork for patients such as medical leave forms or worker's compensation documentation.
  • Assists in maintaining an orderly and professional appearance of the clinic.
  • Filters clinic schedules based on provider-specific criteria.
  • Assists physicians and clinic staff with filing charges, billing, and insurance authorizations.
  • Assists with scheduling patient appointments and clinic closures and reschedules by contacting patients and rescheduling appointments.
  • Answers patient questions regarding outpatient procedures, post-operative recovery, and rehabilitation protocols.
  • Serves as a Preceptor, mentor, and/or supervisor for students observing, shadowing, and obtaining clinical experience in sports medicine.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
Core Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
  • Certification in a relevant specialty or field
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience
