Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Laboratory Quality Control Coordinator to join our team at the Medical Clinic of Houston, L.L.P. This is a critical role that requires a strong background in laboratory quality control and a passion for ensuring the highest standards of patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Develop and implement laboratory quality control policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies.
  2. Monitor and maintain ongoing regulatory compliance with CLIA, CAP, TDH, and OSHA for all aspects of the laboratory department.
  3. Ensure the laboratory department stays current with the latest regulatory agency requirements and revises laboratory policies and procedures as needed.
  4. Effectively communicate changes to laboratory policies and procedures with laboratory personnel and conduct proper training and competency assessment.
  5. Prepare and ensure readiness for regulatory agency inspections and internal inspections.
  6. Review and monitor quality control shifts and trends and take appropriate actions when necessary.
  7. Manage document control, vendor notifications, and recalls.
  8. Ensure equipment and instruments are maintained and calibrated properly, including annual PMs.
  9. Assist the laboratory supervisor in monitoring all phases of external proficiency testing.
  10. Assist the laboratory supervisor in handling procedural and technical laboratory problems immediately by analyzing the root cause of the problems and incorporating procedural changes to prevent the problems from occurring again.
  11. Deliver superior customer service.
  12. Develop a working relationship with physicians, all clinic personnel, and managers to ensure overall clinic standards are met and good customer relations maintained.
  13. Communicate discrepancies or questions to the appropriate personnel to be resolved.
  14. Utilize the laboratory information system to enter test orders, report results, look up results, verify specimen receipt time and date, and check pending tests.
  15. Perform laboratory-related duties, including lab assistant duties.
  16. Perform waived, moderately complex, and highly complex medical laboratory tests and examinations.
  17. Provide direct supervision of all high complexity testing in the assigned department(s).
  18. Maintain detailed records of tests, quality control, calibration, and maintenance performed.
  19. Report results to appropriate personnel.
  20. Set up equipment and instruments required for laboratory testing.
  21. Operate manual and automatic laboratory equipment and instruments to make qualitative and quantitative analyses of specimens.
  22. Calibrate and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and instruments.
  23. Prepare chemicals, reagents, and solutions required for laboratory testing.
  24. Prepare slides for microscopic analysis.
  25. Answer incoming phone calls promptly and professionally.
  26. Provide training to students, new employees, and fellow employees.
  27. Perform various clerical duties.
  28. Ensure cleanliness of the assigned department(s).
  29. Keep records of the training and competency of all laboratory staff.
  30. Adhere to scheduled work hours as assigned and accept changes to work schedule when staffing and workload requires.
  31. Adhere to all clinic policies and procedures, including incident reporting, safety, compliance, and the code of conduct.
Requirements
  1. Participate in annual clinic safety, compliance, and code of conduct training.
  2. Attend training for equipment and instruments in the assigned department as needed.
  3. Troubleshoot assigned department's equipment and instruments as needed and document appropriately.
  4. Conduct monthly audits of lab sections to ensure continuous compliance with regulatory agency requirements (CLIA, CAP, TDH, and OSHA).
  5. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Natural Sciences or equivalent required.

Experience: 3+ years full-time experience in a clinical laboratory setting required.

Certification: MLS (ASCP), SC (ASCP) or equivalent required.

  11. Must communicate in a professional and courteous manner with physicians, patients, nurses, visitors, and other medical personnel when obtaining information, answering questions, or providing information.
  12. Must possess basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  13. Experience involving customer service in a medical setting preferred.
  14. Working knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems preferred.
  15. Basic knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control practices preferred.
