Position Summary
Residential Support Coordinators assist individuals and families in achieving their objectives by guiding them in securing and maintaining stable housing.

Coordinators may be assigned to serve various populations based on program needs, including individuals, families, survivors of domestic violence, individuals with serious mental health challenges, substance use disorders, chronic health conditions, and those involved with the criminal justice system.

Residential Support Coordinators may work within different program models based on needs, such as Permanent Housing, Permanent Supportive Housing, Transitional Housing, and Rapid Re-Housing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

Housing Services

  • Ensure that all established program objectives are met or surpassed, including maintaining regular contact with all assigned participants and their landlords, supporting participants to prevent homelessness, and achieving programmatic goals defined by internal and external stakeholders.
  • Evaluate new referrals for service eligibility and enroll qualified participants in programs promptly.
  • Assist participants in finding suitable housing, conducting inspections, building relationships with landlords or property managers, and facilitating lease agreements. Advocate for participants to ensure housing quality and stability.
  • Support participants with moving logistics and acquiring necessary household items.

Case Management

  • Assess participants' potential challenges to maintaining stable housing and provide coaching, support, and referrals to enhance housing retention, stability, quality of life, and self-sufficiency (e.g., assistance with budgeting, life skills, and communication skills).
  • Facilitate introductions between participants and Employment Navigators to explore job and training opportunities.
  • Collaborate with participants to develop goal-oriented action plans and adjust them as needed.
  • Provide coaching, case management, and additional support to help participants progress on their action plans, including working with family members. Maintain regular contact, including visits to participants' residences.
  • Offer resources, referrals, and follow-up for household members to address comprehensive needs and advocate for participants to ensure they receive necessary services.
  • Identify strategies to tackle short-term or chronic issues, such as substance use or mental health challenges, that may hinder goal achievement and risk relapse into homelessness.
  • Ensure all school-age children are enrolled in educational programs by obtaining necessary documentation and that children under five receive appropriate developmental assessments.
  • Maintain detailed case notes on participants' progress and complete all required tracking and reporting in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with housing staff to organize tenant surveys, gather feedback, and facilitate tenant meetings as necessary.

Program Support

  • Maintain accurate data collection and reporting as required for internal management, external funding sources, and regulatory agencies.
  • Prepare for and participate in program audits.
  • Prepare monthly requests for rent and utility payments, track tenant rent collection, and work with the Finance Department. Follow up on rent arrears and ensure participants adhere to payment plans.
  • Provide recommendations to senior staff for developing or modifying services, policies, and protocols to meet program participants' needs in alignment with the agency's strategic goals.
  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of the housing program.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to fulfill each essential duty satisfactorily. The following requirements represent the education, experience, and skills necessary for the position.

Access to a personal vehicle for regular home visits and meetings, along with a valid driver's license and insurance, is required. A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent life experience is required; graduate-level studies are preferred. Degrees in Social Work or related fields are preferred. Two years of experience in case management within a non-profit setting, particularly with homeless or low-income populations, is preferred, along with significant life experience. Proficiency in Windows operating environments and Microsoft Office is required. Experience with electronic record-keeping is preferred. Familiarity with the Chicago Continuum of Care, HUD, and municipal and state housing regulations is preferred.

Independent work capability and critical thinking skills are required. Active listening and the ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing, are essential.

The working environment may include shared offices, in-person visits to participants' homes, accompanying participants to referrals or partner agencies, and a remote or hybrid work model with scheduled remote and office hours. The housing program is located at Inspiration Corporation's main office and shares workspace with the agency's meals and homeless engagement services programs.

Maintains standard office hours. Attends evening, weekend, and early morning meetings and functions as required.
