Working as a Respite Companion or Behavioral Support Specialist goes beyond mere employment; it involves forming meaningful connections with the individuals and families you support.

Our Respite Companions deliver specialized non-medical direct services and compassionate companionship to children with developmental disabilities and other unique needs.

As a Respite or Behavioral Support Specialist, you will provide primary caregivers the chance to take necessary breaks from their daily responsibilities. Additionally, you will assist clients, their parents or guardians, and their siblings in creating a more relaxed home atmosphere. Your work will take place in various community settings and within clients' homes, primarily serving families in Orange County.

This is a part-time role (up to 30 hours per week) with flexible scheduling, with the potential for growth into a full-time position.

Key Responsibilities:

The Respite Companion will act as the main support staff, equipped with the skills to effectively address the daily challenges of providing respite services to clients, including the ability to enhance specific client skills.
  • Maintain positive relationships with the families you support.
  • Engage clients through enjoyable activities.
  • Provide personal care and assistance with daily living needs.
  • Lead and conduct socialization activities.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate records for each service recipient.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Familiarity with developmental disabilities.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends based on client and family needs.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Proof of valid driver's license, auto insurance liability coverage, and a clear DMV report.
  • Operational vehicle.
  • Current CPR and First Aid training certifications.
  • Clearance with the Department of Justice through a fingerprint background check.

Physical Activity Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 20 pounds (e.g., groceries, housewares).
  • Ability to assist and guide clients requiring physical support (e.g., wheelchair transfers, walking).
  • Active participation in frequent recreational activities.

Training:

The Respite Companion will be required to complete approximately 40 hours of training within the first three months of employment. This training will include competency-based training, on-the-job field training, and additional training provided by IABA professionals or external experts.
