Job Summary

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) and supporting students with special needs in the classroom and beyond.
  • Work closely with special education teachers and administrators to develop and implement instructional programs that meet the unique needs of each student.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, parents, and other stakeholders to ensure that students receive the support they need to succeed.
  • Assist with record-keeping and data collection to monitor student progress and inform instruction.
  • Provide additional support to students in areas such as reading, writing, and math, and help them to develop essential life skills.
  • Supervise students during recess, lunch, and other activities, and maintain a safe and inclusive environment.
  • Participate in vocational and recreational activities designed to promote socialization and independence.
  • Assist with daily living skills such as dressing, toileting, and feeding students with disabilities.
  • Follow established daily schedules and protocols to ensure the smooth operation of the classroom and school.
Requirements
  • At least two years of related college education or an AA degree.
  • Meet the Highly Qualified requirements by passing the Paraprofessional Assessment Exam with a score of 455 or higher.
  • General knowledge of technical procedures and school district practices or policies.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new situations and technologies.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Working Conditions

The Educational Assistant will work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, interacting with students, teachers, and other staff members on a daily basis. The position requires the ability to stand for up to 30 consecutive minutes, move rapidly to intervene in situations, and lift students who are physically disabled or unable to assist in toileting or other activities. The employee may be required to change soiled clothing and wash adolescent-age boys and girls, and assist in cleaning these students and their clothing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of teaching methods and procedures, filing and record-keeping systems, and instructional materials and their uses.
  • Ability to read, understand, and carry out oral and written instructions, and learn the operation of telephones, computers, and other equipment used in the work.
  • Ability to accurately transfer, record, and convey information, and materials as required by the position.
  • Ability to train and supervise student helpers, communicate clearly and appropriately in speech and in writing, and promote the success of special education programs and the students served by these programs.
  • Ability to maintain a patient, positive, persistent attitude and a warm, accepting personality toward persons with disabilities.
