Job Overview:

As a Child Life Specialist at RWJBarnabas Health, you will play a vital role in providing optimal developmental and psychosocially appropriate care for pediatric patients and their families. You will assess children's developmental and coping needs and implement developmentally appropriate therapeutic interventions to minimize distress associated with the healthcare environment and foster resilience.

Responsibilities:

  • Advocate for the needs of children and youth by maintaining open communication with other healthcare team members.
  • Integrate multidisciplinary team goals into the child life program.
  • Communicate concisely to team members, integrating child life theory, research, and practice at case conferences, rounds, and informally.
  • Consult with the Child Life Coordinator regarding all situations requiring specific attention or follow-up.
  • Determine and prioritize needs, scope, and depth of child life service required for each patient.
  • Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with children and families.
  • Follow established program structure, policies, and procedures of the medical center.
  • Give lectures within the healthcare setting, adapting approaches to content to audience.
  • Maintain the playroom and all equipment in a clean and sanitary manner at all times.
  • Seek the involvement of families in their child's child life goals, matching expectations with family.
  • Train and orient volunteers in the Child Life program, matching patients' needs and volunteers' skills in making assignments.
  • Use developmentally appropriate play as a primary tool in assessing and meeting the child's psychosocial needs in the healthcare setting.
  • Use developmentally appropriate and medically accurate teaching aids and techniques to increase knowledge and determine realistic and obtainable goals and objectives for patients' learning.
  • Write concisely, objectively, and accurately in the patients' medical record, documenting developmental and behavioral issues that impact patient care.

Qualifications:

  • Required:
    • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in the field of Child Life, Child Development, Child and Family Studies, or Psychology.
    • Completion of a 600-hour Child Life internship.
    • ACLP exam eligible.
