Position Overview
A Surgical Technician, commonly referred to as a scrub tech, plays a vital role within a surgical team in various medical environments, including Operating Rooms and Labor and Delivery units. The Surgical Technician is responsible for providing essential assistance to surgeons, which includes:
- Preparing the surgical area and ensuring all necessary instruments are available.
- Passing instruments and supplies to the surgical team during procedures.
- Managing and containing surgical tissue and sponges.
- Supporting the overall efficiency and safety of surgical operations.
Work Environment: Surgical Technicians typically operate in hospital settings or outpatient clinics, where they contribute to patient care and surgical success.
Qualifications:
- A high school diploma is mandatory for this role, while additional certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is highly regarded.
- To achieve CST certification, candidates must successfully complete an examination administered by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NBSTSA).
Skills and Expertise: Proficiency in various surgical disciplines such as Orthopedics, Neuro, General Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, Vascular, Urology, and Thoracic procedures is advantageous.
