About the Position

The Assistant Secretary for Housing-Federal Housing Commissioner is seeking a highly skilled Underwriter to join our team. As a Underwriter, you will play a critical role in supporting the agency's mission by providing technical expertise and guidance on underwriting matters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical advice and guidance on non-complex underwriting matters to the Underwriting Branch Chief.
  • Assume responsibility for each assigned project's overall application, processing, construction, closing, management control, coordination, and execution in accordance with HUD's published guidelines and guidance.
  • Negotiate and integrate all agency functions, including underwriting, planning, design review, cost engineering, appraisal, credit evaluation, and approval, loan closing, construction, start-up, and long-term management systems, and sponsor/customer needs.
  • Serve as a point of contact for projects assigned with senior HUD management, the sponsor, representatives of other Federal, state, and local government agencies, and other external organizations.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Public Trust - Background Investigation will be required.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • Have your salary sent to a financial institution of your choice by Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9.
  • Obtain and use a Government-issued charge card for business-related travel.
Qualifications
  • One year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the service.
  • Utilizing a range of concepts, principles, and practices to refinance, acquisition, or construction loans for multifamily properties (5 or more units).
  • Interpreting and communicating laws, regulations, policies, and procedures of mortgage insurance programs.
  • Providing technical advice and policy guidance on multifamily development financing and underwriting-related issues.
Education
  • The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • If you are qualifying based on foreign education, you must submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency.
