Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Laboratory Technologist to join our team at HealthAlliance Hospital. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing routine and special analysis of specimens, following established protocols for quality assurance and quality improvement, and recognizing problems and actively participating in problem resolution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Laboratory Analysis and Related Duties
    • Perform routine and special analysis of specimens according to established protocol.
    • Recognize abnormal or inconsistent test results and follow through accordingly.
    • Review co-workers reports where appropriate, for release.
    • Follow protocol for critical/panic values.
  • Laboratory Competencies
    • Demonstrate and maintain competencies in all applicable testing areas.
    • Demonstrate competency in all clinical departments and limited Microbiology.
  • Quality Assurance
    • Perform quality control procedures according to established protocol.
    • Follow through with corrective action and documentation when appropriate.
    • Proactively alert supervisor to quality control trends and other potential problems.
    • Actively participate in department-based Quality Improvement projects.
  • Maintenance and Troubleshooting
    • Perform routine preventive maintenance of all departmental equipment/instruments.
    • Maintain department inventory, communicating effectively with Supervisor or designee when inventory is low.
    • Recognize instrument malfunction and/or reagent problems and be able to perform problem-solving/troubleshooting measures.
    • Be able to troubleshoot and repair instrumentation problems.
  • Continuing Education / Technical Resources
    • Act as a technical resource for students, technical staff, physicians, and other professional staff.
    • Participate in the continuing education programs offered in the respective department, cross-trained departments, and through the hospital.
    • Interface with clinicians during off-hours and answer questions/concerns related to laboratory tests, procedures, collection information, etc.
  • Specimen collection, processing, and related tasks
    • Perform venipuncture duties within assigned time frame for routine, timed, and stat orders.
    • Report to codes as required within established time frame and follow all technical and administrative protocol.
    • Accurately correlate orders with specimens ensuring proper identification of specimen and follow up with unit as needed.
    • Assess quality and appropriateness (QNS, clotted, labeling, proper collection/container, etc.) of specimens and follow through accordingly.
  • Other Responsibilities
    • Be able to demonstrate effective utilization of computer systems to perform testing for patient care functions.
    • Identify/make recommendations for process improvements related to LIS, test analyzers, and/or manual test methods.
    • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher for Clinical Laboratory Technologist or substantial equivalence as per New York State Education Department, required.
  • Current licensure in New York State as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist; or verification of pending application to NYS as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist and a Limited Permit to Practice Clinical Laboratory Technology.
  • Certification in a national accrediting agency preferred.
