Mental Health Support Specialist

About the Role
We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Mental Health Support Specialist to join our team.
As a Mental Health Support Specialist, you will work under the direction of a Registered Nurse to provide direct patient care and participate in therapeutic milieu.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Accurate and timely documentation of patient records and progress notes
- Establishing therapeutic relationships with patients and maintaining professional boundaries
- Participating in patient rounds and teams
- Completing patient care assignments and identifying patient behaviors that contribute to the development of a crisis
- Utilizing non-verbal and verbal techniques to de-escalate crisis situations and intervening in managing complex patient situations
- Communicating changes in patient status to the Registered Nurse and following Standards of Care and protocols for assigned patients
- Performing Point of Care testing (POC) and possessing basic computer skills to use electronic systems for communication and clinical purposes
- Completing electronic medical records training and demonstrating 80% accuracy on competency test within 30 days of hire
- Working effectively in the therapeutic milieu and participating in planning and implementation of patient groups
- Providing and supervising recreation and other off-hall activities according to patient needs and following established Nursing policies and protocols
- Identifying and reporting house cleaning and equipment problems to the Unit Secretary or Nurse Director
- Participating in the unit's inventory system and reporting when supplies are low
- Initiating activities that assist patients in maintaining a clean environment
- Assisting patients with activities of daily living and identifying patient hygiene needs
- Providing for patients' nutritional needs according to unit procedure and assisting patients during tests, exams, and procedures
- Escorting and supervising patients on and off ground, maintaining patient safety
- Completing mandatory in-service requirements and identifying areas of strengths and areas in need of professional development with the supervisor
- Maintaining competency for treating age-specific patient populations and seeking constructive feedback regarding work performance
- Participating in critical incident de-briefing and consistently demonstrating the hospital's values of integrity, compassion, respect, diversity, teamwork, excellence, and innovation
Requirements
High School diploma or GED required. Prefer two years of college plus one year of clinical experience, preferably in a psychiatric setting.
Verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work in collaboration with others. Previous experience in direct patient care preferred.
Estimated Salary
$65,000 - $85,000 per year, depending on experience
