Through comprehensive instruction and performance opportunities, our students not only enhance their musical abilities but also experience growth in social, emotional, and academic areas, fostering traits such as responsibility, self-esteem, resilience, and purpose. From introducing an instrument to a budding musician to guiding students in music literacy and ensemble performance, we provide enriching opportunities at various community sites across Chicago.

Position Summary

The primary responsibility of the Tuba Instructor will be to conduct both small group and individual lessons, implementing a curriculum that encompasses music theory, individual performance, ensemble work, improvisation, and composition.

Key Responsibilities - Instruction (90%)

  • Deliver exceptional music instruction to students in grades 1-12, including elements of theory and composition.
  • Serve as a consistent and empathetic mentor for each student.
  • Engage actively in faculty meetings, student performances, and assessment processes.
  • Incorporate pedagogical strategies discussed in professional development sessions into lessons.
  • Ensure high-quality instruction that promotes excellence in student performance.


Key Responsibilities - Administrative Tasks (10%)

  • Assess students' musical and behavioral development.
  • Collaborate effectively with families, administrative personnel, and fellow faculty members.
  • Maintain timely communication with the Program Manager and school staff.
  • Prepare substitute lesson plans for any necessary absences.
  • Supervise students during transitions and breaks.
  • Assist with additional projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in music education or performance, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated musicianship, including knowledge of music theory and performance skills.
  • Experience teaching the tuba to children of varying ages and skill levels is preferred.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and adapting teaching methods to meet student needs.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to thrive in a dynamic educational environment.
  • Familiarity with a diverse range of repertoire suitable for different age and skill levels.
  • Strong oral and written communication abilities.
  • Experience working collaboratively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Personal alignment with the mission and values of The People's Music School.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasionally required to lift and move items weighing up to 20 pounds.

Schedule

  • Part-time position available.
  • Must be available for in-person instruction.

Compensation

Hourly rates range from $47 to $60, depending on the type of class.
