Role Overview:

The Surgical Services Technician I plays a vital role in the healthcare team, providing technical support during the perioperative phase under the guidance and supervision of a Registered Nurse, adhering to established clinical standards of care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all necessary supplies and equipment are available for surgical procedures.
  • Prepare by scrubbing, gowning, and gloving.
  • Set up a sterile field with instruments, supplies, and medications, demonstrating knowledge of the procedure and patient positioning.
  • Conduct accurate counts with the circulator prior to the operation and before closing the incision.
  • Assist in gowning and gloving the surgeon and assistants.
  • Aid in draping the sterile field.
  • Pass instruments to the surgeon during the procedure.
  • Maintain the highest standards of sterile technique throughout the procedure.
  • Prepare sterile dressings.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Collaborate with team members for terminal cleaning of the operating room.
  • Assist in preparing the room for subsequent patients.
  • Work alongside the RN and team members to ensure safe patient care.
  • Handle surgical specimens with utmost accuracy.
  • Respond promptly to emergency situations.
  • Engage in cost-effective practices as endorsed by the organization.
  • Complete tasks efficiently, communicating any updates or delays to team members.
  • Address supply issues appropriately, restocking as necessary.
  • Adapt to changes in assignments with a positive attitude.
  • Be flexible with scheduling to meet unit needs.
  • Enhance clinical knowledge and skills independently, gaining experience with various procedures and surgeons.
  • Take accountability for decisions, actions, and outcomes, fulfilling commitments.

Qualifications:

Required Education, Licensure, and Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED

• BLS Certification upon hire or within 30 days

Preferred Education and Experience:

• Prior experience in the operating room (1-5 years)

• Surgical Tech Certification preferred

• ORT Training preferred

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

  • CPR certification at the time of employment or within one month of employment.
