Job Title: Registered School Nurse

Job Summary:

The Registered School Nurse is responsible for providing quality healthcare services to students with developmental disabilities. This includes assessing health needs, developing individualized plans of care, and ensuring the evaluation, supervision, and provision of nursing care are completed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Comply with all relevant regulations and reports any violations, deficiencies, or incidents to the supervisor
  • Assess the health care needs of each student based on available information
  • Develop an individualized plan of nursing services for each student who requires nursing care
  • Establish and maintain a professional working relationship with family, physicians, dentists, and other medical/health care agencies and professionals
  • Educate staff about the chronic conditions and related health care needs of the students
  • Provide initial and ongoing training to staff in all nursing procedures being delegated
  • Complete certification/annual recertification for all medication administration certified staff
  • Maintain adequate first aid, medical supplies, and equipment to meet the needs of the students
  • Completes Accident/Injury reports, and Allegations of Abuse according to regulation and agency policy

Requirements:

  • Must be licensed and currently registered as an RN in New York State
  • Possess one year experience working with developmentally disabled students/persons is preferred

These include practices that treat people with dignity and respect at all times, ensure safety, best possible health/well-being and provide the person with continuity and personal security through the use of natural supports, positive relationships and opportunities for integration in the community.

Staff members should also advocate and work toward assisting the people we support through person-centered planning to achieve the personal outcome goals that they have chosen by facilitating the plans and positive supports necessary to assist the person in progressing toward each outcome.

Essential Job Functions:

Physical demands and Exposure Risk outlined on attached form (A)

Ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, sit, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, climb flight of stairs; Good physical strength and be able to lift/transfer a minimum of 50 lbs.

Ability to perform critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills, write in clear, organized manner, show good judgment, independent action, prioritizing, following directions.

Works independently, as well as cooperatively, with others. Be approachable, enthusiastic and meet job-related tasks accordingly

Human Relations Skills:

The ability to communicate with individuals in a positive manner, both oral and written, serve as an appropriate role model to co-workers and program participants.

Receive supervision instruction in a positive manner. Adhere to agency's policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Maintains a professional attitude and appearance at all times.

Equipment Operation:

The ability to operate medical equipment such as nebulizers, suction devices and the like; ability to operate office equipment, such as computer, copier, fax machine, and laminator.
