Position Summary

The Lead Financial Accountant will oversee the documentation of mortgage accounting transactions, perform reconciliations of general ledger accounts, and support cash management activities.

Key Responsibilities

The assigned accounting duties must be executed in accordance with the following principles:

  • Enhance and adhere to efficient procedures
  • Comply with and uphold company and departmental policies, ensuring proper segregation of duties
  • Guarantee the timely and precise recording of all transactions in the General Ledger
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies as they arise

Primary Focus Areas Include:

  • Monitor cash balances to ensure sufficient funds are maintained in company accounts; participate in bank transfers and wire transactions
  • Calculate commissions periodically and ensure timely accruals for commissions and other loan-related compensations
  • Assist in establishing and monitoring commission profiles within the company’s commission software
  • Conduct month-end close reconciliations, including bank statement reconciliations and other general ledger account reconciliations
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve aged or uncleared balances in assigned accounts
  • Prepare and post journal entries related to payroll and other activities
  • Support the receipt, deposit, and recording of borrower payments and other checks
  • Assist in researching and documenting cash activities, including deposits and payments
  • Facilitate the initiation of wire or ACH transactions and provide necessary confirmations
  • Respond to inquiries directed to the accounting group through various communication channels
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Additional Responsibilities May Include:

  • Handle daily mortgage loan accounting transactions, including loan fundings and sales
  • Manage daily warehouse bank settlements and related accounting transactions
  • Conduct daily reconciliations and cash transfers for borrower escrow account balances

Required Competencies

  • Strong grasp of accounting principles, including debits and credits
  • Understanding of the distinctions between assets, liabilities, equity, income, and expenses
  • Knowledge of cash versus accrual basis accounting
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including data integrity maintenance within large datasets and familiarity with functions such as Sum, Subtotal, SumIfs, Sort, Filter, Formatting, Pivot Tables, and V-Lookup or IndexMatch
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to transaction accuracy
  • Ability to work efficiently with a high volume of transactions without compromising accuracy
  • Capability to work independently
  • Positive attitude and willingness to seek process improvements

Work Environment

This position allows for a hybrid work arrangement. The Lead Financial Accountant will primarily work in an office setting, with occasional remote work permitted upon approval.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in mortgage-related accounting is preferred, with a minimum of 1-2 years or 3-5 years in a senior accounting role focusing on balance sheet reconciliations and handling large data volumes
  • Experience in preparing and posting journal entries using a general ledger system
  • Strong attention to detail and confidentiality
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with Loan Vision Accounting system is advantageous but not mandatory
  • Experience with Encompass Loan Origination System is a plus but not required

Physical Requirements

The employee frequently needs to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, and reach with hands and arms. This role may require extended periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Additionally, the employee must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
