Overview
The Flight Crew Branch at Armstrong Flight Research Center is in search of an exceptional candidate for the role of Supervisory Research Pilot, who will also function as the Deputy Branch Chief.

Key Responsibilities
As a Supervisory Research Pilot, you will provide strategic direction on policies and procedures governing flight operations. You will be tasked with managing, planning, coordinating, and overseeing all activities related to the flight crew.

Your role will involve offering both administrative and technical oversight essential for the successful execution of the Branch's objectives, while fully supporting the Branch Chief.

You will be responsible for defining job roles, selecting personnel, and delegating tasks. Additionally, you will establish technical work requirements and milestones, and assess the performance of the organization and its employees for senior management.

Furthermore, you will deliver management, administrative, technical, policy, and procedural guidance for flight operations, ensuring that the flight crew and mission planners are adequately trained and prepared to meet mission objectives.

Your oversight will extend to evaluating safety-of-flight parameters, handling characteristics, and performance metrics for research aircraft. You will develop, implement, and manage the safety management system, as well as approve and publish operational procedures while coordinating proposed research flight plans.

As a Research Pilot, you will provide critical insights on proposed modifications, repairs, and adjustments to aircraft that may impact airworthiness. You will collaborate with various U.S. Government agencies, civilian contractors, and Center mission staff regarding operational functions.

Supervisory Duties
Your supervisory responsibilities will encompass assigning and evaluating work, recommending personnel actions, administering disciplinary measures, and identifying training needs to foster employee development.

You will promote a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence, and innovation within the team.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the Basic Education Requirement as outlined below and possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

Required Certifications:
A current Federal Aviation Administration commercial pilot's license with an instrument rating or an equivalent military pilot and instrument rating.

Flight Experience:
A minimum of 1,500 hours of pilot-in-command flight time, including at least 500 hours in jet aircraft with a minimum thrust of 3,000 pounds per engine.

Specialized Experience:
To qualify for GS-15, candidates must have one year of directly related specialized experience at the GS-14 level, which includes leading or managing aerospace research, development, or testing projects; providing technical leadership in designing flight profiles for data collection; or guiding the design or evaluation of aircraft modifications.

Education Requirements:
A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, or Computer Science from an ABET-accredited institution is required. Candidates with a graduate degree in a qualifying field may also be considered.

All degrees must have been awarded from accredited institutions recognized within the United States or through Mutual Recognition Agreements for degrees obtained abroad.
