Medical Laboratory Specialist

As a Medical Laboratory Specialist with the U.S. Army, you will play a vital role in the diagnosis and treatment of Soldiers. Your responsibilities will include collecting samples from patients, performing chemical and biological tests, and maintaining laboratory equipment. You will also be responsible for packing, unpacking, inspecting, storing, and distributing blood and blood products.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform elementary blood banking and clinical laboratory procedures in hematology, immunohematology, clinical chemistry, serology, bacteriology, parasitology, and urinalysis
  • Collect blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary puncture
  • Pack, unpack, inspect, store, and distribute blood and blood products
  • Assemble, disassemble, and maintain laboratory equipment
Requirements:
  • Be between the ages of 17– 40
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED
  • Submit to background and medical screening
  • Receive a passing score on the ASVAB
Training:

Job training for a Medical Laboratory Specialist requires 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and 52 weeks of Advanced Individual Training, including practice-testing specimens. You will learn skills such as medical laboratory procedures, the study of human parasites and diseases, and laboratory administration and record keeping.
