Role Overview:
The Custodian is responsible for ensuring that facilities are maintained in optimal condition, focusing on cleanliness, safety, and operational excellence to support the needs of students, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Principal or designated authority, the Custodian will:
1. Execute daily cleaning tasks in assigned areas, including:
- Emptying waste and recycling bins
- Removing visible dirt and debris from floors
- Wet mopping hard surface floors
- Rearranging furniture
- Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, locker rooms, and drinking fountains.
2. Perform periodic cleaning tasks such as:
- Dusting surfaces at various heights
- Cleaning windows
- Wiping down furniture and work surfaces
- Burnishing tile floors
- Washing walls.
3. Conduct seasonal maintenance activities including:
- Snow and ice removal
- Spreading salt
- Mowing grass
- Trimming edges
- Mulching and raking
- Policing grounds for litter and weeding.
4. Carry out deep cleaning duties, which may involve:
- Refinishing tile and wood floors
- High cleaning from ladders or lifts
- Washing furniture
- Deep cleaning carpets.
5. Address as-needed custodial tasks such as:
- Graffiti removal
- Replacing light bulbs and ceiling tiles
- Unclogging plumbing fixtures
- Minor repairs on custodial equipment.
6. Maintain cleanliness standards consistently rated as 'good' or higher on inspections.
7. Assist other personnel as needed to support their work activities throughout the facility.
8. Secure the facility when not in use by checking for unlocked doors/windows, arming alarms, and turning off lights.
9. Report promptly for work, utilize time efficiently, and maintain a reliable attendance pattern.
10. Respond positively to changes and demonstrate a willingness to learn new methods of work.
11. Exhibit teamwork, professionalism, and the ability to follow directions with minimal supervision.
Occupational Safety Duties:
Maintain a clean and safe work environment, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations. Monitor activities to prevent injuries and ensure site safety. Operate various powered equipment safely and report any unsafe conditions immediately.
Qualifications:
- Ability to read and write at a 10th-grade level.
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with email.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment.
- Flexibility to work varied shifts, including evenings and weekends.
- Regular and predictable attendance is essential.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as walking, standing, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Capable of working in varying environmental conditions and using personal protective equipment as necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of professional custodial experience or a combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of safety practices and valid driver's license preferred.
