Position Overview:
The Department of Neurology's New York Education Project (NYEP) is in search of a dedicated and enthusiastic Autism Teacher. This role requires a full-time commitment to support an adult with autism in various settings.
Collaborative Environment:
As part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will collaborate with experts in autism, special education, speech-language pathology, fitness, art, and behavior analysis. Together, you will work to enhance communication, academic, daily living, vocational, and leisure skills in home, educational, and community environments.
Location and Travel:
This position is primarily situated in New York City, with some responsibilities in Connecticut and potential travel to other locations.
Team Contribution:
All team members are encouraged to engage in program development, fostering new educational, vocational, and social opportunities for individuals with autism and related disabilities.
Ideal Candidate:
The successful candidate will demonstrate responsibility, initiative, and the ability to work independently while employing creative solutions. We seek a dynamic professional eager to collaborate with the team to enhance educational, vocational, and social activities for adults on the autism spectrum, particularly those at Level 3.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide individualized support to an autistic individual, assisting with daily routines, personal hygiene, meal preparation, and leisure activities.
- Maintain accurate session logs and record behavior data as per treatment plans.
- Assess individual needs, set measurable goals, and monitor progress.
- Develop and maintain educational materials for both in-person and virtual settings.
- Create and implement tailored lesson plans for individual and small group instruction.
- Ensure the learner's health and safety during all activities.
Job Features:

- Minimum of three years' experience working with non-verbal or minimally verbal autistic individuals.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in a relevant field.
- Certification in CPR and First Aid.
- Familiarity with the New York City environment and outdoor activities.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to travel within New York City and engage in physical activities as required by the role.
