Faculty Position in Hand Surgery and Plastic Surgery

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Plastic Surgery Residency Trained and Hand Fellowship Trained surgeon to join our team at the University of Virginia.

This is a unique opportunity to develop a practice that combines 50% dedicated hand and upper extremity surgery with 50% lower extremity salvage and general reconstructive Plastic Surgery.

The successful candidate will have a passion for both specialties and be board certified or board eligible. Fellowship training in Hand Surgery is required.

Responsibilities
  • Perform a wide range of hand and upper extremity surgical procedures, including trauma cases, peripheral nerve repair and reconstruction, microvascular surgery, joint reconstruction and replacement, and congenital hand anomalies.
  • Cover level one hand trauma call, which consists of bony trauma distal to and including the forearm, microvascular replantation, and upper extremity peripheral nerve and vascular injuries.
  • Participate in the Plastic Surgery call pool, which consists of wound care, tissue replantation, laceration repair, screening transfer requests and other health system related service needs.
  • Deliver expert care in lower extremity salvage and general reconstructive plastic surgery, including complex wound management, skin grafts, flap procedures, and limb reconstruction.
  • Collaborate closely with our multidisciplinary team, including Orthopedic Surgeons and Advanced Practice Providers to provide comprehensive care for patients with complex musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Contribute to resident and fellow education through teaching and mentorship activities.
  • Engage in scholarly activities, including research and publication, to advance the field of Hand Surgery and Plastic Surgery.

The Department of Plastic Surgery, Maxillofacial and Oral Health provides comprehensive care for a variety of patients including programs in Adult Reconstruction, Pediatric Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery, Dentistry, Aesthetic Surgery and Hand Surgery.

There is an ACGME accredited 6-year plastic surgery residency program within the department consisting of 2 integrated residents per year and teaching is considered a fundamental expectation of the faculty.

There are ample resources for academic pursuits within the department and across grounds. The faculty member will be encouraged to develop in a research, educational or service based arena. Involvement in internal and external leadership positions is encouraged.

The successful applicant will have a primary appointment within Plastic Surgery and report primarily to Dr. Scott Hollenbeck, the Chair of the Plastic Surgery Department.

Additionally, the faculty member will be eligible for a joint appointment in Orthopedics in conjunction with a reporting structure to Dr. Bobby Chhabra, the Chair of Orthopedics.

The Division of Hand Surgery is a collaborative effort between the Department of Orthopedics and the Department of Plastic Surgery at University of Virginia.

There is a long tradition of partnership within the Hand Surgery Program exemplified by the annual Morgan – McCue dual department co-sponsored lectureship.

There are numerous opportunities for collaboration across the departments.

Our team consists of a multi-disciplinary group of Plastic Surgeons, Brent R. DeGeorge Jr. and Brittany J. Behar, and five experienced Orthopedic Surgeons, A. Bobby Chhabra (Chair of the Department of Orthopedics), A. Rashard Dacus, D. Nicole Deal, Aaron M. Freilich, and Kacy Peek.

We are committed to providing exceptional patient care and advancing the field of Hand Surgery.

Our practice encompasses both adult and pediatric patient care, and we are proud to serve a large geographic area extending from West Virginia to Tennessee, North Carolina, and the DC Metropolitan area.

As a Level 1 trauma center, we handle a diverse range of cases and collaborate closely with other departments to deliver comprehensive care.

In addition, there are 2 hand fellowship positions offered each year and participation in the fellowship program is expected.

Much of the Hand Surgery outpatient work will occur at the state-of-the-art Orthopedic Center on Ivy Road, which is one of the largest free-standing musculoskeletal centers on the east coast.

Plastic Surgery outpatient care will be performed at the Plastic Surgery clinic located in West Complex on the University Hospital grounds.

Additionally, a subset of adult reconstructive plastic surgery care will be delivered at several sites outside of Charlottesville, including Culpeper Medical Center.

It is anticipated that the position will be 50% Hand Surgery and 50% Plastic Surgery. This is subject to change in conjunction with career aspirations and clinical need.

Requirements
  • Medical degree and completion of an accredited Plastic Surgery residency program.
  • Completion or currently enrolled in an ACGME-accredited Hand Surgery fellowship program.
  • Board certification or eligibility in both Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery.
  • Excellent clinical and surgical skills in hand and upper extremity surgery, as well as lower extremity salvage and general reconstructive plastic surgery.
  • Strong commitment to patient care, safety, and outcomes.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Demonstrated potential for scholarly activities and research.
