We are seeking a skilled Mental Health Worker to join our Inpatient Psych Unit at Hennepin County Medical Center. This part-time role involves working a .8 FTE schedule, with 64 hours per 2-week pay period, 8-hour shifts, and a mix of day, evening, and every-other-weekend shifts.
About the RoleUnder the direct supervision of nursing staff, the Mental Health Worker will perform work of routine difficulty in assisting in the treatment of clients in an acute care inpatient setting. This includes providing patient care, evaluating and intervening in patient situations, and reporting to and working with nursing staff to follow individualized patient care plans.
Responsibilities- Provide patient care to inpatients or patients in the psychiatric emergency department of HCMC, including therapeutic 1:1 interactions, evaluations, interventions, and reporting to nursing staff.
- Participate in planning and implementing treatment team recommendations concerning individual and group patient programming.
- Follow the problem-oriented method for patient charting or reporting on behaviors observed.
- Promote and maintain a healthy and safe treatment setting.
- Provide patient care with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living).
- Maintain an organized and clean milieu.
- Provide milieu support to patients and nursing staff, including patient care activities and clerical tasks.
- May perform various technical procedures after training, competency validation, and upon delegation from a Registered Nurse, such as phlebotomies.
- Perform related work as required, but only after appropriate training.
- One year of experience providing direct patient care services in a psychiatric or mental health setting.
- OR Relevant college coursework in the social or behavioral sciences and/or approved demonstrated skills and ability to care for acutely mentally ill individuals.
- OR An approved equivalent combination of training, experience, and education that may include experience such as working as an HCA/NA; nursing student; or group home experience.
- One year of related experience in a similar healthcare environment (behavioral health, nursing).
- Actively enrolled in or a graduate of a two-year or four-year behavioral health or registered nursing program.
- Training in (or willingness to learn) motivational interviewing techniques.
- Ability to de-escalate sometimes stressful patient situations.
- Knowledge of motivational interviewing skills and techniques.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to support and provide patient and family-centered care in a team environment.
- Ability to meet the diverse needs of the patient population(s) being served.
