Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled CDL Driver to join our team at GFL Environmental. As a CDL Driver, you will be responsible for safely operating a vehicle to collect and transport solid waste and recyclables to landfills, MRFs, or transfer stations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate a variety of vehicle types, including front-end, roll-off, residential, and other trucks, to collect solid waste and recyclables.
  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections and reports, as well as daily truck reports and route sheets.
  • Communicate vehicle mechanical issues to the mechanic and supervisor promptly.
  • Operate the truck and equipment using prescribed techniques to prevent driver-induced mechanical failures.
  • Follow all safety standards, equipment checks, and precautions while performing duties.
  • Maintain a clean vehicle by cleaning the cab interior and exterior.
  • Manage assigned helpers, if applicable.
  • Comply with all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and company policies.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Report accidents or incidents to the supervisor immediately.
  • Exhibit a professional demeanor, manner, and appearance at all times.
  • Maintain accurate records of services performed.
  • Perform extra or special pick-ups, as needed.
  • May be required to complete route observations, document findings, and provide reports to the supervisor.
  • Stop service directives, as necessary.
  • Develop directions to new accounts.
  • May assist with training other drivers.
  • Attend safety and branch meetings.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) desired.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Minimum one (1) year of commercial driving experience or CDL school certificate.
  • Ability to meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to Company standards.
  • Ability to demonstrate safe driving and equipment operation skills.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of truck components and basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
  • Ability to control equipment operations and maneuver the truck in tight spaces.
  • Ability to recognize unacceptable waste and communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend associated documents and maps.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Flexibility to adapt to change and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Ability to exert muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 pounds repetitively.
  • Ability to coordinate two or more limbs while sitting or standing.
  • Ability to follow all company safety policies and procedures.
Physical and Mental Demands
  • Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell.
  • Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to regularly lift/move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds.
  • Sitting is required 75% of the time due to driving duties.
  • Ability to work in usually loud conditions.
Working Conditions
  • Frequently exposed to loud noise, humidity, rainy/stormy weather, extreme hot and cold temperatures, moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • Work in outdoor environments up to 100% of the time.
  • Works route away from branch location on a continuous basis throughout the day.
  • Occasionally work in high precarious places.
  • Work in motor vehicle traffic conditions constantly.
  • Work environment is usually loud.
