Optometrist Medical Specialist

To provide comprehensive eye care services to patients, including examining patients with a full range of visual problems, diagnosing visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies, and prescribing treatment as licensed and credited. To refer patients to other appropriate Kaiser Permanente providers as needed for further evaluation and treatment.
Key Responsibilities:- Conduct thorough eye exams using a full field of optometry instruments and techniques.
- Diagnose and treat visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies according to state laws and regulations.
- Prescribe and fit contact lenses to meet patients' visual needs.
- Determine visual requirements for partially sighted patients.
- Prescribe low-vision aids to aid patients with visual impairments.
- Use diagnostic pharmaceutical agents to detect and diagnose ocular pathology in certain jurisdictions.
- Use examination techniques to identify ocular signs of systemic diseases and medications.
- Refer patients to other Kaiser Permanente providers as needed for further evaluation and treatment.
- Participate in departmental and educational meetings, including peer review activities.
- Consult with internal medicine, pediatrics, and ophthalmology on patient care issues.
- Assist in implementing eye care education programs for medical center staff and patients.
- Evaluate and manage anterior segment disorders under the standing orders of a physician and in co-management with an ophthalmologist.
- Graduation from an accredited school of Optometry.
- Enrollment in PECOS within 90 days of hire date.
- Optometrist License (Maryland) OR Optometrist License (Virginia) OR Optometrist License (District of Columbia).
- Basic Life Support required at hire from American Heart Association.
- National Provider Identifier required at hire.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an interdisciplinary health care environment preferred or successful completion of accredited residency program.
- Accredited residency in Optometry preferred.
