Position Overview

As a key member of the Enterprise Systems team, the Linux Systems Engineer II plays a crucial role in the management and optimization of computing resources. This position involves the installation, configuration, and ongoing maintenance of Linux-based systems to support both academic and operational functions.

Core Responsibilities

System Administration:
  • Execute software installations and upgrades for Linux operating systems and associated applications.
  • Provide maintenance and support for Linux systems, including DNS and DHCP configurations.
  • Develop and enhance automation scripts using Python or similar scripting languages.
  • Monitor system performance and implement tuning measures to ensure optimal operation.
  • Oversee patch management and system upgrades in accordance with industry best practices.
  • Conduct regular security audits and configuration assessments.
  • Ensure data integrity across workstations and servers through effective software and hardware solutions.
Technical Leadership:
  • Research and recommend enterprise systems and services, acting as a technical lead for deployment initiatives.
  • Establish and promote standard operating procedures for system management.
  • Identify and implement enhancements to Linux systems that support the university's mission.
  • Facilitate collaboration among server administrators to document and resolve issues effectively.
  • Perform root cause analysis on service disruptions and implement corrective actions.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a computer-related discipline, with relevant experience considered in lieu of formal education.
  • A minimum of three years of experience managing complex Linux environments.
  • Experience with technologies such as Linux servers, DNS, BIND, DHCP, server virtualization, and identity management.
Preferred Skills
  • Proficiency in managing DNS/BIND Linux environments and executing system migrations.
  • Experience with Sympa mailing systems, including integration and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a multi-vendor server environment with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication skills to engage with diverse stakeholders, from students to senior management.
  • Knowledge of project management principles and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace and advancing social justice initiatives.
Physical and Work Environment
The role requires prolonged periods of sitting and repetitive motions associated with computer use. Occasional physical activities, such as lifting up to 40 pounds, may be necessary. The position is primarily office-based, with potential for remote work arrangements. A valid driver's license is required for university-related travel.
