General Overview
**This position is exclusively available to current employees of Pender County.**
As a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (Supervisor I), you will oversee the Mosquito Control initiative and manage staff within this program. Your responsibilities will also extend to the Food & Lodging program, Daycare program, and Well Section, including conducting investigations related to public complaints.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement strategies for the mosquito control initiative.
- Supervise part-time staff responsible for mosquito control operations, including assigning specific zones for spraying.
- Ensure maintenance of all County vehicles and ULV sprayers.
- Address public complaints to identify and mitigate mosquito breeding sites.
- Coordinate larviciding efforts in targeted areas.
- Educate the community on practices to reduce mosquito breeding.
- Stay informed on the latest research and serve as a resource for local municipalities.
- Act as a resource for the food and lodging program, inspecting facilities for sanitation compliance.
- Enforce applicable State and Federal regulations at food and lodging establishments.
- Provide guidance on construction and renovations of food and lodging facilities to ensure compliance.
- Deliver food safety training to food service staff.
- Investigate incidents of foodborne illnesses.
- Document daily activities for reporting purposes.
- Participate in assessments of permitted facilities before and after disasters.
- Engage as a member of the EPI team.
- Contribute to Public Health Preparedness activities and pursue ongoing professional development.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Possess a solid understanding of state and federal environmental health regulations. Demonstrate practical knowledge in microbiology, chemistry, biology, and environmental sciences relevant to this field. Familiarity with community resources and inter-departmental operations within Pender County is essential.
**Educational Requirements:**
Graduation from an accredited four-year institution with at least 30 credit hours in biological or physical sciences, or a degree in Environmental Science. Completion of North Carolina Centralized Intern Training for Registered Environmental Health Specialists and obtaining relevant authorizations is required. A valid North Carolina driver's license and registration as a REHS by the North Carolina State Board of Registered Sanitarians are mandatory.
Physical Demands
This role may require occasional lifting of moderate weights, as well as considerable walking. The employee must be capable of driving over 300 miles weekly and may encounter various weather conditions and environmental challenges. Strong oral and listening skills are essential for effective communication.
