Position Overview

Wissahickon Charter School is seeking a dedicated Assistant Educator for our Kindergarten program at the Fernhill campus. This role is essential in fostering both academic and social-emotional growth for our young learners in Philadelphia.

Key Responsibilities

Classroom Duties:

  • Support the lead educator during instructional sessions.
  • Facilitate small group activities as directed by the lead educator.
  • Provide individualized instruction to students as needed.
  • Maintain daily communication with the lead educator.
  • Assist in managing classroom behavior and discipline.
  • Ensure students adhere to classroom and school-wide expectations.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to classroom management (data entry, homework checks, filing, copying).
  • Guide students in conflict resolution using the "Talk it Out" approach.
  • Implement Responsive Classroom techniques in interactions with students and staff.
  • Identify and report any unusual student behaviors to appropriate personnel to support student well-being.

Recess Responsibilities:

  • Monitor student safety and welfare at all times.
  • Engage students in various activities, from sports to discussions.
  • Provide one-on-one support to students as necessary.
  • Be aware of shared outdoor spaces and ensure student safety.
  • Encourage exploration of the environment when appropriate.
  • Interact with students in a professional yet approachable manner.
  • Enforce school rules consistently.
  • Apply the "Talk it Out" method and Responsive Classroom techniques during interactions.
  • Report any concerning student behaviors to the appropriate staff.

General Expectations:

  • Arrive on time and be present in your role each day.
  • Maintain professionalism in all interactions.
  • Understand appropriate boundaries in student and staff interactions.
  • Conduct adult conversations in designated areas.
  • Dress in business casual attire suitable for outdoor activities.
  • Limit personal electronic device usage to breaks or emergencies, keeping them away from students.
  • Notify your supervisor and lead educator in case of absence.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; a degree in education is advantageous.
  • Experience in urban educational settings is preferred.
  • Strong passion for education and student development.
  • Reflective mindset and openness to professional growth.
  • Appreciation for the diverse strengths and challenges of K-2 students.
  • Able to collaborate with colleagues with varying teaching styles.
  • Commitment to learning and applying Responsive Classroom practices.
  • Possess all necessary clearances.
  • Engagement in discussions about race, equity, and bias in education.

Compensation:
