Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Chemical Engineer 3 to join our team at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and operating processes or unit operations to create a diverse range of products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop processes or unit operations to create a diverse range of products.
  • Evaluate and manipulate the chemical properties of various substances used in the fabrication of new products.
  • Design, model, evaluate, and implement chemical processes, instrumentation, and equipment to ensure effectiveness in engineering and design.
  • Perform trials, tests, and/or experiments to support engineering, production, and/or R&D activities.
  • Apply the principles of chemistry, nuclear science, biology, physics, material science, math, and engineering to solve problems that involve the production, use or conversion of chemicals, materials, and energy.
  • Use the principles of biology and the tools of engineering to mimic biological systems to create products or to modify and control biological systems so that they can replace, augment, sustain, or control chemical and mechanical processes.
Qualifications
  • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, chemistry, or related field plus 3 years of related work or educational experience; or, Masters in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, chemistry, or related field plus 5 years of related work or educational experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in plant systems design and/or systems engineering in a plant operating environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with air pollution control systems and continuous emissions monitors.
  • Knowledge of NQA-1 Quality Assurance requirements and a demonstrated ability to apply quality assurance principles to test planning, execution and documentation of testing and analysis activities.
  • Member in a professional society/community.
Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment
  • Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals; potential exposure to controlled levels of ionizing radiation.
  • Experimental work involves exposure radiological materials and environment and typical laboratory chemicals and equipment that are appropriately assessed and managed to prevent exposing staff to hazards.
  • Would need to become a Radiological Worker I or II to be able to support radioactive materials testing in radioactive designated areas.
Testing Designated Position

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
