Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Dental Assistant to join our team at the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska. As a key member of our dental team, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and supporting our dental professionals in delivering high-quality services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist dentists chairside during procedures, anticipating their needs and providing necessary instruments, medications, and materials.
  • Participate in treatment procedures by retracting tissue, tongue, and cheek, keeping the area of operation clear, and preventing the buildup of saliva and oral debris.
  • Complete tasks assigned by dentists in a responsible and timely manner.
  • Assist patients in completing medical history statements, review patient medical history, and sign legal documents.
  • Record examination and treatment information as relayed by dentists.
  • Apply rubber dams and place cotton rolls to isolate operative sites.
  • Take preliminary impressions for study models and modify impression trays as needed.
  • Perform other lab work as assigned.
  • Remain compliant with infection control protocols.
  • Clean, sharpen, sterilize, and prepare dental instruments.
  • Order supplies, maintain inventory, and handle equipment problems as needed.
  • Clean and maintain dental equipment as needed.
  • Instruct patients in preventive dental care by demonstrating brushing and flossing techniques and the use of disclosing tablets.
  • Ensure the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska Dental Clinic is compliant with Nebraska radiation regulations and maintain appropriate logs.
  • Perform receptionist duties related to scheduling dental appointments, receiving patients, answering the phone, and documenting dental visits for proper billing.
  • Take radiographic images as directed by dentists.
  • Operate, maintain, and adjust dental X-ray equipment and materials.
  • Position patients to achieve proper angles for dental radiographs.
  • Perform coronal polishing.
  • Assist hygienists with recording probe depths, taking radiographs, polishing, and seating patients.
Requirements
  • Unlicensed Dental Assistant: High school diploma or GED, two years of general dentistry chairside experience within the last 5 years, or completion of an externship with the Ponca Dental Clinic.
  • Licensed Dental Assistant: Passed the certification exam for dental assistants (CDA) offered by the Dental Assisting National Board, earned 1,500 hours of experience as a dental assistant within the past 5 years, and applied for and was granted a Nebraska license to practice as a Dental Assistant.
  • Expanded Scope Function for Licensed Dental Assistant: Completed all State of NE approved courses or achieved reciprocity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Dental Assistant Certificate from an accredited college.
  • Valid driver's license and be insurable.
  • One year experience working with Native Americans or Native American organizations.
  • Experience using Dentrix office management software and Dexis imaging software.
  • Experience with digital scanners.
Working Environment and Physical Demands

The position is located within a typical dental clinic setting. Occupational hazards include radiological hazards involved with X-ray procedures, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, HIV/AIDS, and other communicable diseases and bio-hazardous materials that may be transmitted through bodily fluids and cause risk in the treatment applied to the patient.

Employee will sit, stand, bend, lift, and move intermittently during work hours. Employee is subject to on occasion, emotionally upset patients, family members, personnel, and visitors.
