Position Overview

This role is specifically for Scammon Bay, Alaska and does not offer options for remote work or relocation assistance.

GCI's Rural Operations Specialist will play a vital role in the upkeep and maintenance of satellite and wireless infrastructure in remote Alaskan communities. The main clientele includes company installers, technicians, and engineers engaged in Network Operations across these rural areas.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintenance Inspections: Conduct monthly site evaluations to ensure security, assess for damage, and perform visual checks on equipment.
  • On-Call Duties:
    • General upkeep of the site, including brush clearing, trash removal, and cleaning of facilities.
    • Assist traveling personnel and contractors with site access and general labor tasks.
    • Clear snow from satellite dishes.
    • Refuel generators during power outages.
    • Promptly report service interruptions, theft, or damage due to weather events.
    • Technical Assistance: Provide remote support as needed, swap basic equipment, and carry out troubleshooting steps under guidance from technical support.
    • Wireless Equipment Installation: Set up equipment at customer locations for GCI wireless internet, including mounting and connecting to customer devices.
  • E911 Service Reliability: Ensure compliance with emergency call capabilities, as this is a critical function of modern telecommunications. GCI prioritizes the integrity of 911 services, as failures can have serious public safety implications.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:

Six months of experience in an arctic environment.

Preferred:

  • Customer service experience.
  • Relevant telecom industry certifications.
DRIVING REQUIREMENTS:

This position necessitates reliable transportation for occasional travel to job sites and the ability to transport technicians and their equipment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Work involves both indoor and outdoor tasks in cold weather conditions.
  • Ability to move and handle equipment and supplies weighing up to 70 pounds occasionally, and 50 pounds regularly.
  • High dexterity required for operating hand tools and managing small components.
  • Frequent movement across uneven surfaces, often affected by weather conditions.
  • Visual acuity necessary for detailed inspections and assessments.
  • Ability to distinguish colors for safety and operational purposes.
  • Auditory acuity required for equipment operation and communication.
  • Work may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to work shifts as assigned and operate standard office equipment.
  • Effective communication skills are essential.
  • Physical agility sufficient to perform job duties safely.
  • Willingness to work additional hours as needed.
