Automotive Transmission Technician - Overview

The Automotive Transmission Technician is responsible for the repair and maintenance of both manual and automatic transmission systems in vehicles, adhering to the quality and efficiency standards set by the dealership and manufacturer. This role requires specialized training specific to various manufacturers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute transmission repairs as specified in the repair order, ensuring efficiency and precision in line with dealership and factory standards.
  • Diagnose the underlying causes of transmission malfunctions.
  • Disassemble and repair transmission units as necessary.
  • Inspect vehicles to identify any additional safety or service requirements.
  • Promptly inform the service advisor of any additional repairs needed, unnecessary work, or if repairs cannot be completed.
  • Coordinate with the parts department to procure necessary components.
  • Tag and save parts for warranty jobs or customer requests.
  • Reinstall repaired transmissions, refill fluids, and make necessary adjustments.
  • Conduct road tests on vehicles when required or refer to a test technician.
  • Document all work performed and recommendations on the repair order.
  • Participate in manufacturer-sponsored training sessions.
  • Stay updated on manufacturer technical bulletins.
  • Oversee the work of apprentice technicians as assigned.
  • Report any machinery defects or malfunctions to the supervisor.
  • Ensure that customer vehicles are maintained in a clean condition, reporting any changes in appearance or condition to the service advisor.
  • Maintain a tidy and organized work area.
  • Account for all dealership-owned tools and manuals, returning them in the same condition as received.
  • Comply with all federal, state, and local regulations, including hazardous waste disposal and safety protocols.
  • Operate all tools and equipment safely.
  • Immediately report any safety concerns to management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill each essential duty satisfactorily. The following qualifications are indicative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required:

  • High school diploma or GED; or one to three months of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of a one-year certificate program from a college or technical school; or three to six months of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Associate degree from a two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university; or one to two years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two to four years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Proficient in writing simple correspondence and effectively presenting information in small group settings.
  • Capability to interpret documents such as safety rules and maintenance instructions. Proficient in writing routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and apply concepts of algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and interpret a variety of instructions in various formats.

Certifications

Relevant certifications such as Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in various areas including Automatic Transmission, Brakes, Electrical Systems, and more are preferred.
