Job Summary

This position is part of the Research Drilling Program within the U.S. Department of the Interior. As a Drill Rig Operator, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining drill rigs, water trucks, trailers, compressors, pumps, and other auxiliary equipment. You will also be involved in drilling methods, including direct and reverse mud rotary and air rotary, downhole air hammer, continuous core, auger, direct push, and any other method deemed necessary to complete the mission.

Key Responsibilities

- Operate and perform basic maintenance/repair of drill rigs, water trucks, trailers, compressors, pumps, and other auxiliary equipment.
- Obtain geologic cores from holes using a variety of different core barrels under difficult geologic conditions.
- Perform drilling methods that include direct and reverse mud rotary and air rotary, downhole air hammer, continuous core, auger, direct push, and any other method deemed necessary to complete the mission.

Working Conditions

This position requires working in all kinds of weather, frequently in wet, muddy, and dry conditions, exposed to poison growth, reptiles, insects, and under noisy conditions. You will also be exposed to cuts and bruises in using tools and working around moving machinery, strains while breaking or adding joints to drive shaft, slips and falls in wet weather, and the possibility of electric shock or burns. Travel will typically be up to 21 days in the field without time off.

Requirements

- Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
- Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.
- Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year probationary period.
- A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement is required as a condition of employment. You will be expected to obtain a valid CDL within one year after reporting for duty. Failure to obtain or maintain a CDL will result in the termination of appointment.
- Selectee subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical exam and drug test.

Additional Requirements

- You will operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle as part of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) Have a valid State CDL License or be able to Obtain such within 90 days of hire. (2) Provide a copy of your driving record. (3) If selected, you are required to provide proof of a valid State CDL License & a copy of your driving record.
- Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
- A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
