The Middle Market Commercial Lines Master Field Underwriter represents the company among a defined territory of agencies, managing and servicing a profitable renewal book of Commercial Lines business utilizing the highest level of technical underwriting ability.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct territory planning, performance analysis, and agency management to maximize production, profit, and retention.
- Lead the analysis of new business opportunities from exposure, pricing, service, and sales perspective, driving collaboration and meeting process while working with independent agents and coaching less experienced field underwriters and mentoring agencies.
- Underwrite and manage commercial lines book of business for assigned territory, representing the company, building strong relationships, and managing the book of business to attain profit and revenue objectives.
- Act as the key contact for specified agencies, leading agency business planning and account inventory management.
- Build an account inventory of new business, well in advance of the expiration date, to achieve profit and revenue objectives.
- Coordinate monthly renewal strategy discussions with underwriting and services team for individual renewals.
- Discuss new accounts in the pipeline on a consistent basis, reviewing opportunity and best approach for account and establishing an underwriting relationship with policyholders.
- Underwrite and collaborate on new and renewal Commercial Lines accounts, pre-qualifying customers and leading the account team to analyze new business opportunities.
- Coordinate collaboration meetings on large, more complex accounts in accordance with company guidelines.
- Evaluate exposures to loss, determine pricing, and accept or reject accounts based on the company's underwriting guidelines.
- Make risk acceptability and pricing decisions throughout the policy life cycle.
- Document underwriting decisions, maintain supporting information and data in accordance with audit standards.
- Complete the Account Summary document, recording details about the account, and complete and share a post-mortem on accounts that are not acquired to improve sales acumen and competitive intelligence.
- Review, approve, or decline underwriting authority referrals from junior field underwriters or managers, engage in the state planning process, including rate review process, state plans, and annual projections.
- Serve as the Account Steward, ensuring that all commitments on the account are lived up to and drive standard scheduled periodic communication with the policyholders.
- Establish and maintain effective communication regarding underwriting procedures and practices, growth and profit goals, state and territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends, and agency relations.
- Review quality assurance audits, participate in underwriting procedures and practices projects, submit recommendations to improve department results, including coverage, pricing, or competitive issues.
This role requires 8+ years of P&C Commercial Underwriting experience, a Bachelor's degree in Business or related discipline, and/or commensurate work experience, as well as a valid driver's license and a driving record that conforms to company standards.
This position involves frequent travel, including regular utilization of assigned fleet vehicle, to cover assigned territory, which may involve traveling on short notice or other daily driving duties as assigned.
