San Francisco, California, United States PennyJar Capital Full time

PennyJar Capital is on a mission to modernize the insurance industry, focusing on claims processing, which currently involves manual methods and costs billions of dollars annually. We can improve this process.

Our company provides software solutions to large insurers, empowering them to succeed in a technology-driven world. From self-service claim filing software to backend fraud detection, we're the driving force behind claims processing for some of the world's largest insurers.

The challenges we face are complex and diverse, from creating digital experiences that provide comfort and clarity to claimants at their most stressed and vulnerable, to orchestrating large-scale ML-driven decision making on billions of dollars of claims payments. Life at PennyJar Capital is dynamic, collaborative, and rewarding.

We're seeking an experienced Lead Data Scientist to join our growing team.

You'd excel in this role if:
  1. You're passionate about revolutionizing traditional industries.
  2. You want to work with a close-knit team of brilliant engineers driven by a consequential and unsolved problem.
  3. Being a pioneer—in our architecture, approach, and team—is inspiring, not burdensome.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Becoming a key owner of our data pipelines and processes.
  2. Leading and mentoring other engineers on the growing team.
  3. Training models on high-dimensional inputs.
  4. Developing models that handle both tabular and unstructured data.
  5. Creating models that learn quickly from fresh incremental data (few-shot learning).
Requirements:
  1. A strong desire for future growth and a proven track record to support it.
  2. Experience building and shipping meaningful and complex products.
  3. Well-formed opinions about software engineering that remain open to revision.
  4. A background in or willingness to delve into the startup ecosystem.

We offer a competitive salary of $175,000, as well as an equity package, health care plan (platinum medical, dental, & vision), life insurance (no cost to you), paid time off (uncapped vacation days & paid holidays), family leave (maternity, paternity), 401(k) contribution (PennyJar Capital contributes 3% of your income even if you don't contribute), and health and dependent care FSAs (pre-tax flexible spending accounts for out-of-pocket expenses).

Please note that we're committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, background, religion, gender identity, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship status, marital status, or disability.
