Animal Control Specialist

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Animal Control Officer to join our team at Henry County, GA. As an Animal Control Officer, you will be responsible for enforcing animal control codes and ordinances, protecting human life and property, and assisting with the care of animals housed in the County animal shelter.
Key Responsibilities- Patrol County roads and neighborhoods to locate and pick up stray animals, and to observe and investigate animal control violations.
- Enforce animal-related laws and ordinances, capture domestic, wild, dangerous, or aggressive animals, set animal traps, load animals into cages, transport animals to animal shelters, veterinarian offices, or other locations, relocate displaced wildlife, remove dead animals from roadways, and assist law enforcement by removing animals from accident or crime scenes.
- Respond to animal-related complaints, respond to and investigate animal bites, potential animal cruelty and abuse, animals in distress, stray and nuisance animals, barking dogs, wild and dangerous animals, sick and injured animals, animal behavior problems, or animal control laws, provide information and assistance, mediate and resolve citizen disputes, conduct interviews of bite victims, animal owners, and witnesses, determine vaccination status of animals, issue citations and violations, and perform follow-up as appropriate.
- Process captured animals and animals removed from homes or dangerous situations, trap, catch, and impound stray or nuisance animals, handle, lift, and carry animals, restraining as appropriate, handle frightened, fractious, and injured animals, check animals for signs of rabies, disease, or other illnesses, quarantine animals as necessary, assign and transport animals to shelter, and prepare and maintain all related documentation.
- Interpret and enforce ordinances, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures related to animal control, ensure staff adherence to established safety procedures, monitor work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals, initiate any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations, issue citations to violators of animal control ordinances, and contact law enforcement to request arrests.
- Receive and respond to questions concerning responsibility of pet ownership, laws and ordinances, pet adoption, and other department issues, provide information and answers questions, and resolve routine customer service and animal care and control issues.
- Assist in caring for shelter animals, feed, train, and exercise animals, administer vaccines and medications, and draw blood as needed, groom pets by bathing, trimming nails, and treating for fleas, wash bedding and toys, place/ read microchips on animals, and perform temperament tests for appropriate adoption matches.
- Process a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures, receive and review various documentation, review, complete, process, forward, or retain as appropriate, prepare or complete various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, compile data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports, and maintain computerized and/or hardcopy records.
- Operate a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software, and operate general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
- Communicate with supervisor, other County employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Requires a High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of related experience in animal control, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Euthanasia Certification.
- National Animal Care and Control Association (NACA) ACO Level 1 and/or Level 2 Certification a plus.
The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuity.
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may require standing for extended periods of time. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, heights, confined spaces, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, disease, or rude/irate customers. The noise level in the work environment may be at times moderate to loud.
