BASIC FUNCTIONS

The primary role of this position is to support the administration of medications to residents as prescribed by the attending physician, under the guidance of the nurse supervisor or charge nurse, and/or the Director of Nursing Services. The medication administration will adhere to current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations governing long-term care and assisted living facilities. You are entrusted with the authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary to fulfill your assigned duties.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Report any discrepancies in medication administration.
  • Complete administrative tasks, including necessary forms, charts, and reports.
  • Prepare, administer, and document oral and/or topical medications accurately and safely.
  • Ensure that any medications brought into the facility are properly examined and identified.
  • Assist with medication documentation.
  • Verify that all medications are correctly labeled.
  • Document and remove medications that are no longer in use.
  • Manage the return and reorder of medications as needed.
  • Measure, record, and report residents' vital signs accurately.
  • Observe and confirm that medications are ingested or applied as directed.
  • Ensure that no medication is administered without a written, signed, and dated order.
  • Adhere to established guidelines regarding the storage of drugs and biologicals.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of the resident's comprehensive assessment as required.
  • Familiarize yourself with common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms related to medication administration.
  • Perform all other assigned duties.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/JOB TRAINING

A minimum of a high school diploma is required.

Must be a licensed Certified Medication Aide, having successfully completed a state-approved training program and any necessary examinations in accordance with state laws.

Experience

A minimum of 6 months of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant is required.


Specific Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of the residents served.
  • Ability to interact tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
  • Capability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with other staff members.
  • Familiarity with computer systems, applications, and other office equipment.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace.

Job Training: Typically takes up to 3 months to competently perform this job with the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities, along with relevant work experience and/or education.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is conducted in various areas of the facility.

Intermittent movement is required during working hours.

Frequent interruptions may occur.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile individuals within the facility.
  • Ability to concentrate and apply reasoning skills and good judgment.
  • May be required to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergencies.
  • Must be able to stand and/or walk 80%-100% of the time.
  • Ability to sit and stoop as needed.
  • Must be able to lift 5 lbs. from floor to waist approximately 20% of the time; push/pull up to 30 lbs. approximately 60% of the time.
