Position Responsibilities
  • Prepare construction documentation and oversee project administration throughout the construction phase.
  • Assist in formulating structural engineering concepts that integrate planning, architecture, engineering, and other essential systems, fostering structural innovation.
  • Support the team in selecting and evaluating construction systems, determining the structural engineering needs for the project.
  • Collaborate with Senior Project Engineers to resolve complex challenges related to structural engineering design.
  • Implement project delivery strategies to effectively communicate design intent and scope across all project phases, aligning with Project Team requirements.
  • Lead the production resources and schedules for documentation related to agreed deliverables.
  • Coordinate the efforts of structural staff engineers.
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with consultants and knowledge resources to ensure deliverables are well-coordinated, integrated, and meet project performance goals.
  • Conduct and/or oversee the structural engineering research and analysis necessary for the project.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of and provide significant input in shaping the design philosophy and strategy of the project, effectively communicating this to team members as needed.
  • Proactively review and coordinate project documents for compliance with technical requirements.
  • Support project document control tasks and uphold quality control in line with the Structural Engineering QA/QC program.
  • Lead efforts in archiving projects according to SOM protocols.
  • Manage the implementation of the project management program utilizing the Project BIM Execution Plan, promoting digital innovation.
  • When applicable, organize and lead the structural engineering team's construction phase services with limited oversight, including establishing procedures, supervising shop drawing reviews, attending construction meetings, and coordinating responses to contractor inquiries.
  • Participate in firm-wide structural engineering committees, contributing to the advancement of initiatives led by these groups.
Leadership Responsibilities
  • Actively lead a project team.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor team members.
  • Engage in talent strategy to identify specialists and future leaders for the firm.
  • Demonstrate leadership in implementing sustainable strategies across all project assignments.
  • Drive innovation in work processes by contributing to the development of services, standards, and procedures that mitigate financial and legal risks for SOM.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Structural Engineering.
  • Licensed in the state of practice; LEED accreditation preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience or equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of materials, detailing, construction techniques, structural engineering principles, codes, and standards.
  • General knowledge of sustainable strategies and principles, including familiarity with LEED or other green building rating systems.
  • Proven ability to lead project teams and manage project schedules, budgets, and programs effectively.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office/Project and Adobe Suite.
  • Familiarity with structural engineering analysis and design software.
