Position Title: Food Service Associate

Location: Courtyard Cafe

Position Purpose: Under close supervision, the Food Service Associate is responsible for setting up and organizing serving lines and dining areas within the college dining facilities. This role involves serving food from counters and steam tables to patrons, as well as managing leftover food items and maintaining cleanliness in kitchen utensils and equipment, as well as the dining area at the end of the shift. The associate will also assist with daily catering requests.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience: No formal education or prior experience is necessary.
  • Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: A minimum of six months of relevant experience in food service operations or an equivalent background is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions.
  • Experience in food service within an institutional setting is advantageous.
  • Basic knowledge of cleanliness protocols and general sanitation regulations.
  • Willingness to learn proper food protection and handling methods.
  • Understanding of food service operational procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on customer relations.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift/carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts and potential overtime.
  • Commitment to diversity and serving a diverse population.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Transport trays and containers of food and supplies from the kitchen to the dining area.
  • Stock and arrange food, dishes, silverware, and other supplies at serving stations.
  • Serve food from counters and steam tables, including salads, vegetables, meats, and desserts.
  • Prepare hot and cold beverages as required.
  • Maintain cleanliness by cleaning tables, seats, and general dining areas according to sanitary procedures.
  • Remove food after meals and clean equipment and work areas.
  • Learn and adhere to safety precautions and proper food handling procedures.

Cash Handling Duties:

  • Operate the cash register to accurately itemize and total customer purchases.
  • Review price sheets for updates and sales.
  • Scan items to record prices and total purchases.
  • Collect payments and provide change for cash transactions.
  • Maintain vigilance against potential shoplifting and implement prevention strategies.
  • Count cash in the drawer and manage the register at the start and end of shifts.

Catering Support:

  • Assist with daily catering orders as needed.
  • Read menus and orders to determine the quantity and type of food and supplies required.
  • Prepare and package sandwiches and desserts.
  • Load delivery cartons with food and beverages for distribution.
  • Set up tables and decorations for events, serving food and beverages to guests.
  • Pack dishes and utensils for transport back to the catering establishment.

Additional Duties:

Perform other related tasks as assigned.
