Job Summary:

We are seeking a Part-Time Materials Engineering Technician to provide assistance in the field to support the Materials Section. The successful candidate will perform a combination of asphalt/aggregate/concrete plant monitoring/sampling for materials to be delivered to VDOT construction maintenance, and D/B projects. Responsibilities include:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recordkeeping: Compile and maintain automated and written reports and project records for materials sampling and testing conducted in production plants, on project sites, and in the laboratory.
  • Project Documentation: Prepare and maintain daily documentation of project activities. Ensure documentation is submitted and is completed. Avoid project delays and solve project-related matters.
  • Engineering Technology: Apply principles and practices of engineering technology to assigned program areas. Interpret policies and procedures and apply in daily work assignments.
  • Plant Monitoring and Inspection: Inspect materials production and collect samples at plant. Assist with plant laboratory inspections. Perform statistical sampling in accordance with VDOT quality assurance program. Input data and assist with data analysis and preparation of reports for distribution.
  • Laboratory Testing: Conduct laboratory tests on material samples collected from project sites. Compute and document test results.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and repairs on testing equipment. Follow appropriate guidelines for equipment storage, use, and transport.
  • Communication: Communicate with VDOT staff as well as external contacts and consultants. Proactively resolve issues at the lowest level. Project a positive VDOT image. Keep supervisor advised of important development and field observations.
  • Field Monitoring and Inspection: Monitor and document materials placement techniques, testing, and equipment at project site. Assist field staff on proper testing procedures and preparation of samples for materials testing. Collect samples from project site. Compute and document test results. Assist with monitoring large concrete pours or asphalt paving that may require working at irregular hours.

Requirements:

  • Ability to perform mathematical computations and prepare simple test reports.
  • Ability to develop and maintain project documentation for transportation-related projects.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Materials certifications vary by position. Ability to obtain combination of certifications that apply to specific materials position within 12 months of employment.
  • Knowledge of state and federal guidelines and regulations as related to transportation.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Engineering, Construction, or related field desired.
  • Materials testing certifications.
  • Knowledge in highway materials testing, inspection, or construction.

Special Instructions:

DMV and fingerprint-based criminal history records check, references, and work history verification by the Agency. Valid Driver's license is required. Safety shoes are required. Must have or obtain required VDOT certifications within 12 months of hire, include Asphalt Concrete Field (Level I and II), Asphalt Concrete Plant (Level I), Hydraulic Cement Concrete Field, ACI, Hydraulic Cement Concrete Plant and all proficiency tests necessary to obtain the aforementioned certifications. May be required to operate or work in the vicinity of devices containing radioactive materials and emitting low levels of ionizing radiation. Position requires unrestricted mobility, including, at times, unrestricted mobility in irregular terrain; the ability to stand for long periods of time; the ability to work in a variety of environments affected by, but not limited to, such elements as dust, vapors, heat, and moisture; various traffic conditions; and the ability to lift 50 lbs. May be required to work nights and weekends. All employees are required to work in emergency situations, to include weekends, holidays, and outside normal work hours; assignments may vary based on business needs.
