Job Overview

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Collaborate with the head coach in the designated interscholastic sport to uphold a high-quality program within the guidelines of Navajo Preparatory School, Inc. Support each student-athlete in developing advanced skills, fostering a sense of discipline and sportsmanship, and enhancing self-esteem; cultivate a sense of value, self-discipline, recreational growth, as well as the principles of fair play and leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Preference for certified educators (NPS, Inc. staff will be prioritized).
  • A valid New Mexico coaching license is mandatory for the sport.
  • Relevant experience and/or education in the supervised athletic activity.
  • Commitment to dedicating significant time to student-athletes and the sport.
  • Must exhibit sensitivity, firmness, insightfulness, adaptability, consistency, and flexibility.
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogen Training is required.
  • Strong emphasis on effective human relations and communication skills, including oral, nonverbal, and written forms.
  • Proficiency in the Navajo language is essential.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required.

New hires must provide proof of immunity or vaccination against tetanus, diphtheria, and measles/rubella, as well as tuberculosis status via skin test or X-ray within thirty (30) days of employment, and at subsequent intervals as determined by the supervisor.

Navajo/Indian Preference:

Preference will be given to Navajo, American Indian, or Alaskan Tribal members who provide the necessary documentation and meet the qualifications for the position. The Navajo/Indian preference law will be applicable in all aspects of this role.

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION

This position is compensated at a coaching salary rate, disbursed in two (2) installments during the supplemental contract term.

Note:This position may be subject to furlough or reduction in force in accordance with NPS, Inc. Personnel Policies due to unforeseen funding reductions requiring program adjustments.

SUPERVISION

Primary: Athletic Director, Head Coach

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Effectively support and fulfill responsibilities in alignment with Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc. (NPS) Policies and Procedures.
  • Represent NPS professionally, enhancing community awareness of the program.
  • Safeguard the confidentiality of student and staff personnel information.
  • Take a leadership role in developing the athletic program that integrates with academic and residential initiatives.
  • Employ sound coaching techniques throughout all program phases.
  • Design and maintain an effective conditioning and injury prevention program.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Student Life/Athletic Director to establish a reliable equipment accountability system.
  • Encourage good sportsmanship among players, coaches, and fans.
  • Adhere to all school policies and procedures related to the athletic program.
  • Exemplify good sportsmanship and enforce sportsmanlike conduct among players consistently.
  • Coach individual participants in both fundamental and advanced skills necessary for their development in the sport.
  • Demonstrate the ability to motivate the team and individual players.
  • Earn the respect of players.
  • Instill a positive attitude towards self, team, staff, parents, and the sport among individual players.
  • Communicate personal and program expectations clearly to the team and individual players.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate a safe and regular practice program throughout the season.
  • Enforce all league, state, and national association rules applicable to the respective sport.
  • Ensure that all necessary forms are completed and submitted to the Athletic Director before practice begins.
  • Clarify training rule policies to players and coaches.
  • Promptly return all forms to the Athletic Director.
  • Recommend purchases of equipment, supplies, and uniforms as needed.
  • Oversee safety conditions of the facility or area designated for the sport at all times when students are present.
  • Establish performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition for the sport.
  • Follow appropriate procedures for managing discipline issues.
  • Collaborate with administration, athletic director, fellow coaches, and students to promote the overall interests of the athletic program.
  • Work with maintenance and transportation staff, and others involved in supporting the athletic program.
  • Exhibit a positive attitude and enthusiasm for the assistant coaching role.
  • Fulfill all duties assigned by the head coach.
  • Assume responsibility for facility and personnel management in the head coach's absence.
  • Remain loyal to the head coach and the team, adapting personal strategies to align with the head coach's overall vision.
  • Report all injuries, misconduct, or unusual situations to the head coach, Athletic Director, or Executive Director of NPS, Inc.
  • Participate in clinics, workshops, and professional organizations related to coaching.
  • Strive to enhance coaching strategies and techniques.
  • Maintain current certifications in Blood Borne Pathogen Training and CPR/First Aid, renewing annually.
  • Enforce discipline and sportsmanship standards consistently, establishing penalties for breaches of conduct.
  • Assist the head coach in inventorying all equipment at the season's conclusion.
  • Attend all practices from the start to the end of the season, and be available for all staff meetings and scouting duties.
  • Complete all requirements mandated by state and national organizations.
  • Engage professionally and courteously with colleagues, supervisors, other school staff, students, parents, and community members.
  • Commit to a growth plan that aligns with the services provided to the school.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the head coach or Athletic Director.

EVALUATION

Evaluation will be conducted in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc.
